WICHITA - The Wichita State men's tennis team concluded its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Drake, which clenched the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with the win.
In perhaps its most tightly-contested doubles competition of the season, WSU took two of three doubles matches from the Bulldogs. Drake won the No. 2 match when Mauricio Ballivian and Ivan Mendoza took an 8-2 decision from WSU's Scott McCormick and
Matt Teivans. The Shockers countered with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 match, where
Vlad Marinescu and
Adrian Chermaci rallied for an 8-6 win over Drake's No. 1 team of Maor Zirkin and Cesar Bracho.
Jonathan Obrist and
David Cavalcanti secured the doubles point for the Shockers, earning a 9-8 (3) tie-breaker decision over Drake's Ricardo Lau and Guilherme Marsiglia in the No. 3 match.
The Bulldogs made their rally in singles play. Lau picked up a quick point for Drake, tying the match at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over WSU's McCormick. Zirkin followed with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set decision over WSU's Marinescu in the No. 1 match to give Drake a 2-1 edge. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 3-1 behind Ballivian's straight-set, 7-5, 6-1 win over Chermaci in the No. 1 match, but Cavalcanti brought the match score back to 3-2 witha 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Drake's Mendoza in the No. 4 match.
Drake won the match when Bracho defeated Obrist in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 3 match, giving the Bulldogs the decisive fourth point.
With the match already decided,
Matt Teivans picked up WSU's third win of the dual in a three-set, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 thriller over Drake's Marsiglia.
The Shockers must now sit and wait for the seedings to be announced for next week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, which will be played in Omaha, Neb. The tournament will begin Friday, April 23.
