Box Score WICHITA -- Will Baez hit two home runs and
Jordan Cooper tossed the first complete game of the season to help lead Wichita State (12-9) to the series win with a 6-1 victory over Long Beach State (7-11) Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Baez finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI, while
Taylor Brown and
Clint McKeever each posted two hits on the day.
The Shocks struck first in the second after a
Mitch Caster double brought home
Cody Lassley to give Wichita State an early 1-0 lead.
Wichita State broke the game open with a three-run third after
Will Baez hit his first home run in a Shocker uniform, a three-run shot over the fence in left field that extended WSU's lead to 4-0 after three.
The Dirtbags posted their only run in the fourth, after back-to-back singles allowed Steve Tinoco to score after a Shocker error, trimming WSU's lead to 4-1 after four.
WSU tacked on another run in the fifth after
Clint McKeever led the inning off with a double and came home on a one-out single by
Josh Rosecrans that gave the Shockers a 5-1 edge.
Baez' second homer of the day came in the seventh, giving WSU a 6-1 lead, which was more than enough for Shocker starter
Jordan Cooper (3-2), who scattered seven hits while giving up just one unearned run in the first complete-game effort by a Shocker pitcher in 2009.
Andrew Gagnon (1-2) took the loss for The Beach, throwing 85 pitches in 4.1 innings of work. Gagnon gave up five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four.
WSU returns to action on 80's Night at Eck Stadium Tuesday night when the Shockers play host to Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Tickets are 2-for-1 Tuesday night, contact the Shocker Ticket Office at 978-FANS for more information.
