ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - David Cavalcanti picked up WSU's only singles win as the Shockers dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 36 New Mexico Friday night at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble in Albuquerque.
New Mexico took the early advantage, sweeping the Shocker doubles team to earn the doubles point. Vlad Marinescu and Adrian Chermaci suffered an 8-2 setback to the 71st-ranked Lobo duo of Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby. Jonathan Obrist and Michal Zawadzki dropped the No. 2 match to Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood by an identical 8-2 count, while David Cavalcanti and Matt Teivans fell, 8-4, to Elliott Change and Ben Dunbar in the No. 3 match.
Cavalcanti picked up the easiest win of his Shocker career in Friday night's match, earning a default win over New Mexico's Ben Dunbar in the No. 5 match. Vlad Marinescu dropped a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 decision to Johnny Parkes, who was ranked No. 103 in the most recent ITA poll. In the No. 2 match, Adrian Chermaci dropped a third-set tie-breaker to Lobo foe Graeme Kassutzki, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-2, while Jonathan Obrist won just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Miles Bugby. Michal Zawadzki fell, 6-2, 6-1, to Elliot Chang, and Matt Teivans rounded out the Shocker scorecard with a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5 loss to Phil Anderson.
The Shockers are back in action Saturday in Albuquerque when they take on their second-straight opponent from the Land of Enchantment; the 75th-ranked New Mexico State Aggies. Saturday's match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
