Shocks' Season Ends, 49-41

3/13/2009 10:00:00 PM

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Wichita State women's basketball team (13-18), gave No. 2-seed Creighton (20-10) a tough game, but the league's best defensive team showed why as the Bluejays advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 State Farm MVC Championship with a 49-41 win over the Shockers Friday night inside Family Arena.

Daria Frazier led all scorers with 14 points in her final game in a Shocker uniform. Marcy Sudbeck added 12 points in her final game for the Shockers. Marisah Henderson had two assists and falls one shy of tying the Wichita State single-season record.

The Shockers got off to another sluggish start offensively, missing their first eight shots on the night before Daria Frazier ended the drought with a layin with 13:18 left in the first. The Bluejays capitalized, racing out to a 10-4 lead before a three-pointer by Jacie Hoyt brought the Shockers to within one, 10-9 with 12:38 left in the opening frame.

The teams went cold from the field over the next three minutes before Marcy Sudbeck sank her fifth and sixth free throws of the day to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 9:04 remaining in the first.

Megan Neuvirth snapped a three-plus minute drought for the Jays from the field with a bucket at the 8:45 mark, sparking a quick run that extended the Creighton lead to as many as five before back-to-back baskets by Sudbeck pulled the Shockers within one, 16-15 with less than six minutes in the half.

Jacie Hoyt's second three-pointer of the evening gave WSU its first lead, 18-17, with 4:21 left before the break but Creighton got back-to-back threes from Kelsey Woodard in the final minute to take a 28-24 lead into the break.

WSU managed to stay with the Bluejays, despite shooting just 33-percent in the first half. Creighton shot 34-percent overall but Woodard's two shots from the arc were the first of the night for the Bluejays who were 0-of-9 from three-point range until that point.

The Shockers had four first-half steals but failed to capitalize, scoring just five points off six Bluejays miscues. Just like the game in Omaha, the Bluejays owned a stout 24-15 advantage on the glass, including a 12-4 edge on the offensive boards. WSU's bench was held scoreless in the opening frame.

Kristina Voss scored four of the first six points of the second to allow the Bluejays to extend their lead to six, 32-26, two minutes into the half, but two more Sudbeck free throws brought the Shockers back to within four by the 17-minute mark.

Chevelle Herring's layin with 12:13 left snapped a five-minute scoring drought by both clubs, and extended the CU lead to 34-28. WSU suffered through an nine minute stretch without a score from the field, and the Bluejays capitalized, getting a three-pointer from Herring with 11:17 left to push the CU advantage to 37-28.

WSU again mustered the strength to answer, using back-to-back buckets from Frazier to cut the deficit to 39-32 with seven minutes to play. The Shocker defense held Creighton scoreless for nearly seven minutes but could not cut into the Bluejay lead, as an 18-footer from Voss with 3:17 to push the CU lead to 41-34 proved to be the dagger that would end Wichita State's season.

The Shockers got a pair of free throws from Frazier with 1:30 left to close within seven, but time ran out on Wichita State's run in the tournament to close the season at 13-18.
