Men's Tenns Marches Past Mavs, 6-1

WICHITA - Wichita State's men's tennis team extended its three-match win streak Friday, with a 6-1 win over Texas-Arlington. Freshman David Cavalcanti picked up his seventh win in as many matches in the Shocker win.

The Shockers earned the doubles point, taking two of three doubles matches from the visiting Mavericks. David Cavalcanti and Matt Teivans cruised to an 8-4 decision over UTA's Brieuc Hamon and Adam Srkala in the No. 3 doubles match. Texas-Arlington made things interesting, winning the No. 2 match when Gonzalo Bienzobas and Jason Lateko picked up an 8-5 win over Jonathan Obrist and Michal Zawadzki, but WSU secured the point when WSU's No. 1 doubles team of Adrian Chermaci and Vlad Marinescu held off UTA's Dmitry Minkin and Mindaugas Celedinas for a 9-7 win.

Wichita State continued to roll through two matches in singles play. Zawadzki notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Srkala in the No. 4 match, and Marinescu downed Celedinas by an identical 6-4, 6-3 score in the No. 1 match.

The Mavs would not go down without a fight, however. UTA's Minkin did his part to extend the match for his team, taking Chermaci to three sets, but Chermaci came out on top in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 decision to secure the Shocker win.

With the match already decided, freshman David Cavalcanti improved to 7-0 on the spring season with a straight set, 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Bienzobas, while Matt Teivans defeated Subirats, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (5).

Obrist suffered the only defeat of the match, dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5) to UTA's Hamon.

The Shockers are back in action Saturday when they host arch-rival and Missouri Valley Conference foe Creighton at Genesis Health Club's Rock Road location. Doubles play is expected to begin between 12:30 and 1 p.m.
