Shocks Fall at MSU, 75-65

2/21/2009 3:00:00 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Four Shocker players scored in double-figures but Wichita State (10-15, 2-12) could not withstand a late Lady Bear rally and 21 Missouri State (8-17, 4-10) points at the free-throw line as MSU sent WSU to its seventh-straight loss, 75-65, Saturday afternoon inside JQH Arena.

Daria Frazier led all players with a game-high 19 points, while Marcy Sudbeck chipped in her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and pulling down 13 rebounds in her final trip to Springfield. Haleigh Lankster scored 12 points while Val Siemens added 10 on the afternoon.

Casey Garrison led the Lady Bears with 15 points, while Lacey Boshe added 14 points and seven boards.

The Lady Bears made their first five shots en route to an early 7-2 lead, but Sudbeck scored the first six points for the Shockers to cut the early deficit to 9-6 with a turnaround jumper with just less than 16 minutes left in the first.

MSU then used a 16-6 run over the next 6:30 to build its lead to 27-14 by the eight minute mark of the first as WSU suffered through a four-minute stretch with just one basket, allowing the Lady Bears to push the advantage to double-digits.

WSU got its first push of the day with a 10-4 run that cut the MSU lead to eight, 35-27, with 3:25 left to play in the opening frame. The Shockers were able to make the run by holding the Lady Bears scoreless from the floor for nearly six minutes, as MSU posted nine points during the stretch, all on free throws.

Haleigh Lankster's three-pointer with 2:22 left in the first brought the Shockers to within 36-30, but MSU scored eight of the last 11 points of the half thanks to a pair of WSU turnovers in the final minute before Marisah Henderson's banking three-pointer at the buzzer cut the deficit to 44-33 at the break.

Missouri State shot an impressive 58-percent in the first half, but it was the Lady Bear defense that stole the show, scoring 14 points of 12 Shocker miscues in the first. WSU managed a 43-percent effort from the floor in the first, including a 5-for-11 effort from three-point range.

The Shockers scored the first four points of the second frame, closing to within 44-37 after a Daria Frazier layin in transition which forced MSU to use a timeout just :46 seconds into the half. Missouri State had an answer yet again however, as a Casey Garrison three-pointer with 19-minutes left to play sparked an 11-4 run over the next three minutes as the Lady Bears pushed their lead to 55-41 after another Garrison basket with 15:58 left to play.

WSU responded with a 10-4 run of its own over the next three minutes as the Shockers got back-to-back three-pointers from Haleigh Lankster and Val Siemens and a jumper from Siemens to close to within 59-51 by the 12-minute mark of the second.

The Shocks used a quick 5-2 run to cut the deficit to seven, 63-56, with nine minutes left to play, but Missouri State answered with the dagger, a 10-2 run over the next five minutes that put the game out of reach for WSU after Jasmine Malone's runner in the lane extended MSU's lead to 73-58.

Wichita State did not stop fighting however, using a 9-2 run fueled by seven-straight points from Daria Frazier to close the deficit to 73-65 with 1:21 left. WSU got another look on the offensive end but couldn't connect and Garrison connected on a pair of free throws in the final minute to fashion the final, 75-65.

WSU is next in action against Southern Illinois, Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., inside Charles Koch Arena.
