WICHITA?Wichita
State's home opener resulted in a
Shocker sweep, 7-0, over Bethany
College at the Sheldon Coleman
Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
A nearly-perfect early spring day moved the match to WSU's
tennis complex instead of the previously scheduled indoor match at Genesis
Health Club, and the Shockers took advantage. Adrian Chermaci kicked off the
match with a quick victory at No. 2 singles over Bethany's
Jakub Syzmanski in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Matt Teivans, David Cavalcanti and Michael Zawadzki wrapped
up their matches at nearly the same time to notch three more wins for the
Shockers. Playing at the No. 6 spot, Teivans easily defeated Jose Garcia, 6-1,
6-1. Cavalcanti knocked off Bethany's
Santiago Gonzalez in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0. Zawadzki followed suit when he
beat Jach Schoeman, 6-3, 6-0.
Battling Bethany's
Adam Hambleton in No. 1 singles, Vlad Marinescu followed a tough first set with
a quick second set, 6-4, 6-0. Jonathan Obrist ended the longest singles match
of the afternoon with a win, 7-5, 6-3, over Mitchell DeJong in No. 3 singles.
Rolling into doubles, Wichita
State swept the No. 1 and No. 3
spots. Teivans and Cavalcanti dominated Bethany's
Kody Koester and Derek Watson, 8-0. Chermaci and Marinescu did the same with an
8-0 victory over Schoeman and Hambleton. Obrist and Zawadzki completed the
Shocker sweep when they defeated Syzmanski and Ivan Rashkov.
The Shockers are in action again next Friday when they play
host to Texas-Arlington at 1 p.m. at
Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
