- Wichita State scored a season-high 42 points in the first half, and held on for a 69-61 win over Missouri Valley Conference leader Northern Iowa Saturday evening in front of a Valentine's Day sellout crowd inside Charles Koch Arena.
Clevin Hannah led the Shockers with 14 points while J.T. Durley added 11 of his own. Ramon Clemente led all rebounders with 10 boards in the game.
Northern Iowa was led by Adam Koch's 17-point effort, while Jordan Eglseder added 13, seven of which came in the first four minutes of the game.
Hannah came out of the gates on fire, hitting three three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game, and helping the Shockers to a 22-11 lead by the 11:30 mark, when WSU was shooting at a red-hot 81.8 percent from the field. The Shockers extended their lead to 16 on a Reggie Chamberlain trey that gave the hosts a 29-13 edge at the 8:02 mark. Chamberlain's trey was part of a 21-5 run that allowed Wichita State to take its largest lead of the half, 35-16 at the 4:45 mark of the opening period. UNI cut the deficit to 12 behind a 7-0 spurt over the next two minutes, but the Shockers ended the half on a 7-2 run, capped by Hannah's fourth trey of the half, that gave WSU a 42-25 lead; its largest first half scoring total of the season.
Both teams struggled to find rhythm in the second half, combining for 14 points in the first seven minutes of the final frame. Slowly but surely the Panthers clawed away at their deficit, pulling to within nine by the 10-minute mark after putting together a 14-6 run to start the first half. Northern Iowa snuck within seven, 54-47, at the five minute mark after a Kerwin Dunham three pointer, but WSU's David Kyles answered with a trey of his own to push the WSU lead back to 10, 57-47, with just under four to play, but UNI was far from finished. After watching WSU re-gain a 10-point lead on four separate occasions over th enext four minutes, the Panthers got back-to-back treys from Johnny Moran and Kerwin Dunham, and had pulled within five with just 44 seconds left, but two free throws by Durley and a free throw by Murry gave WSU the lead they would never relinquish.
Wichita State shot 47.2 percent from the field, and 44.4 percent from long range, while the Panthers converted 36.5 percent of their field goal attemps, and posted a 28.6 percent mark from long range.
Northern Iowa hit 17 of their 28 free throws, while the Shockers hit 11 of their 17 charity attempts.
The Shockers will look for their third win in a row Thursday when they travel to the land of Lincoln to take on Illinois State. Tip-off at Redbird Arena is slated for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be seen locally on Kansas 22.
