Box Score
WICHITA, Kan.- Graham Hatch scored a career-high 21 points and Wichita State (7-1) closed out its three-game homestand with a 72-45 win over South Carolina-Upstate (1-6), Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
While no other Shockers reached double figures, everyone that played at least one minute scored. Gabe Blair set a career-high with 11 rebounds to go along with his six points off the bench.
USC-Upstate was led by Ryan LeGates' nine points.
JT Durley got the Shockers on the board early with two quick baskets over Upstate's Nick Schneiders, but was forced to come out at the 17:32 mark after picking up his second foul.
After the Spartans pulled within three, WSU rattled off a 12-1 run thanks to its defensive pressure leading to easy baskets. Following an Upstate miss, Toure Murry took a pass from Clevin Hannah, two steps and threw down a one-handed dunk to ignite the crowd.
Moments later, back-to-back steals off the press led to a Blair dunk and a foul. Garrett Stutz capped the run with a pair of free-throws to give WSU a 19-8 advantage with 10 minutes to play in the half.
WSU stretched its lead with defensive stops and hot shooting. Upstate turned the ball over 11 times in the half, versus just three for the Shockers, and WSU capitalized. In the final two minutes David Kyles connected from behind the arc once while Hatch did the same twice, including just before the halftime buzzer.
After being slowed by foul trouble against Texas Southern, Hatch played 17 first half minutes with no fouls and tied his season-high with 14 points to lead all scorers.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the WSU press forced Upstate to turn the ball over and rush its shots. Halfway through the second half, the Spartans had turned the ball over four times and shot just 25-percent, connecting just three times on 12 attempts.
The Shockers grabbed their largest lead of the game, 68-38, following a lob pass from Kenny Manigault to Demetric Williams for a layup and a layup from Durley.
Walk-on Derek Brown put the finishing touches on with a layup on a nice pass from Manigault for his first points of the season.
WSU is back in action Tues., Dec. 9 at UMKC. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m., from Municipal Auditorium with Bruce Haertl and Craig Steven calling the action on Kansas 22.
