Shocks Turn Back UAPB, 68-56

12/29/2009 10:00:00 PM

WICHITA -- Freshman center Jazimen Gordon posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Chynna Turner poured in 17 as the Wichita State women's basketball team (8-3) wrapped up non-conference play with a 68-56 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-9) Tuesday evening inside Charles Koch Arena.

After not having a single player post double-digit rebounds through the first 10 games Wichita State got a pair Tuesday night, as Marisah Henderson joined Gordon with 10 rebounds as WSU posted its best rebounding effort of the season thus far with 52 boards on the night.

Haleigh Lankster scored 16, 10 of which came at the free-throw line in a 10-for-11 effort at the stripe. Henderson finished with a game-high eight assists, while Turner narrowly missed her own double-double with nine boards.

The teams traded baskets early until an eight-footer from Jazimen Gordon sparked a 13-0 Shocker run to help WSU push out to a 18-7 lead, forcing UAPB to spend three early timeouts as the Shockers continued to build their lead.

Wichita State's defense was on display as well, keeping UAPB scoreless for an eight-minute stretch midway through the half that allowed the Shockers to build the lead to double-digits, 18-7, but the eight-minute mark of the first.

Shay Holmes snapped the drought for the Lady Lions with a layin to close the WSU advantage to 18-9, and Dominique Smith scored on another layin to cut the Shocker lead to 18-11 with 7:28 to play in the opening half.

WSU finished the first on a 17-8 run, capped by a Sheena Johnson basket with 2:19 left that helped fashion Wichita State's 35-19 edge at the break.

Neither team was on fire from the field, as WSU shot 33-percent in the first and limited UAPB to a 29.6-percent effort from the floor. The difference game at the free-throw line where the Shockers made 13-of-15, while the Lady Lions went just 2-for-10 at the stripe.

The Shockers scored the first five points out of the break to push the lead to 40-19, and then to 21 points after a Johnson laying gave WSU a 42-21 lead with 18:55 left to play.

It was a lead that would stand up the rest of the way, as the Lady Lions went on a 12-2 run midway through the second, but a Marisah Henderson three-pointer snapped a four-minute scoring drought for the Shockers.

Chynna Turner's three with 5:56 left gave WSU a 57-44 lead and the Shockers never looked back cruising to the win.

WSU returns to action when it opens conference play at home against UNI at 7:05 p.m., New Year's Eve inside Charles Koch Arena.
