Gordon's Shot Lifts Shocks to Win, 53-52

12/20/2009 6:00:00 PM

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Freshman Jazimen Gordon hit a wide-open 12-footer with :0.8 seconds left to hand Wichita State (7-3), a thrilling come-from-behind 53-52 win over UMKC (3-8), Sunday evening in the second and final day of the 2009 Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout at Kendal Isaacs Gym in Nassau.

Sheena Johnson, Haleigh Lankster and Jessica Diamond led the Shockers with nine points while Gordon chipped in eight to lead WSU. UMKC's Chazny Morris led all players with 18 points while LeAndrea Thomas was the only other player in double figured with 11.

The Shockers opened the game with six-straight points before a Sam Sikkink spraked a 5-0 run by the Kangaroos to close the Shocker lead to 6-5 following a pair of UMKC free throws with 13:56 left to play in the first.

Chynna Turner's jumper with 11:08 left gave WSU a 15-7 lead and capped a 9-2 Shocker run, but UMKC battled back with a 9-1 run to tie the game at 16-16 following a Morris three with 6:12 left in the half.

The remainder of the half was all UMKC as the Shockers were buried in foul trouble, sending the Kangaroos to the line 20 times in the first half alone. That, coupled with a near 11-minute drought from the field helped push UMKC to its biggest lead of the game at that point with a 31-19 cushion at the break.

The Shockers shot just 26.7-percent while UMKC enjoyed a 45-percent effort in the first, including a 2-for-5 effort from the arc.

Wichita State stormed out of the gate to start the second half on a 21-8 run, pulling within one, 39-38, after Marisah Henderson with 8:22 left to play and gained their first lead of the second when Gordon sank a pair of free throws with 7:59 to play.

Gordon tied the game a third time, at 42-42, with a jumper at the 7:14 mark and the Shockers held a slim lead for much of the remainder of the half. Sheena Johnson made 1-of-2 at the stripe with :34 seconds to give WSU a 51-47 lead before the madness of the final :30 seconds began.

It began with a Morris three-pointer with :27 seconds left, followed by a Shocker turnover and pair of WSU fouls which sent Morris to the line for a pair with :18 seconds left, as UMKC trailed 51-50. Morris sank them both, giving the Kangaroos a 52-51 lead. WSU brought the ball down and called timeout with eight seconds left, setting up the game winner from Gordon.

The play developed, leaving Gordon open for a 12-footer straight up with the basket with :0.8 left on the clock, and UMKC's inbounds pass fell to the floor, giving the Shockers the win.

The Shockers held the Kangaroos to 23-percent shooting in the second half. Junior Morgan Boyd was named to the All-Tournament Team.

WSU next returns home to take on UAPB on Dec. 29 before opening Valley play at home on New Year's Eve.
