WICHITA -- The Wichita State basketball team (4-1) picked up its fourth-straight win as the Shockers used a 25-point performance from sophomore guard
Haleigh Lankster to push past Loyola (4-2) Wednesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Lankster led all players with a career-high 25 points, including a career-best seven three-pointers. Freshman forward
Morgan Boyd tied her career-high by scoring 10 points but proved more impressive by grabbing a career-high nine boards to lead all rebounders on the evening.
Lankster battled the Ramblers' leading scorer Elyse VanBogaert all night long in a scoring war that ended with a season-high 19 points for VanBogaert. She was the only Rambler to reach double digits while WSU had three in double figures including Lankster, Boyd and freshman
Chynna Turner.
The Ramblers opened the game on a 10-5 run after WSU started just 2-for-7 from the field. The Shocks then answered with a quick 6-0 run to grab an 11-10 lead before both teams settled in.
The Shocks then used a 9-2 run to push out to an 18-12 lead following a 14-footer by
Chynna Turner. Loyola ripped off six straight to tie the game at 18-18 before WSU raced ahead again with a 10-2 run of its own to lead 28-21 by the under-eight timeout.
It was a lead the Shockers would maintain until late in the half, as the Ramblers charged back with an 11-4 run that tied the game for the fifth time in the first at 32-32, before
Morgan Boyd's laying with :27 seconds left gave WSU a 34-32 lead at the break.
Both teams finished the half on fire after slow starts, as Loyola shot 50-percent in the first and WSU connected on 48-percent of its attempts in the opening frame.
Boyd's three-pointer with 18:37 left in the second sparked a 14-7 run for the Shockers that allowed them to extend the lead to 50-43 by the under-12 timeout. WSU extended the lead to as many as nine before a Monica Albano three-pointer cut the advantage to 52-46 with nine minutes to play.
The Ramblers used a 7-0 run to take a 53-52 lead before Boyd hit one of two at the stripe to tie the game at 53-53 with three minutes to play. Lankster's three-pointer with 2:54 to play gave WSU a 56-53 lead. She hit her seventh and final three of the night in the ensuing possession to all but seal the game on the Shocks' fourth-straight win.
The Shockers return to action again when they wrap up a five-game homestead at 7:05 p.m., Friday against Northern Colorado.
