Box Score CLEVELAND - Thirty seconds into their first true-road game of the season, the Shockers (4-1) took a lead they would never give back as they rolled the Cleveland State Vikings in their return game of last season's ESPN bracketbusters match up, 69-54.
Sophomore guard Toure' Murry's double-double led a dominating Shocker offensive effort that included three players in double-digits and a 20-point plus lead for the majority of the second half. Murry scored fifteen and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds on Saturday afternoon. Senior point guard Clevin Hannah dropped in 16 points on a perfect 3-for-3 day from behind the arc while sophomore center Garrett Stutz tallied 13 points with six rebounds.
"I'm very pleased," Head Coach Gregg Marshall said. "When you win against a Gary Waters-coached team, it's a big deal. When you win at their place, it's a bigger deal."
The Shockers used the three-point line early and often in the opening minutes of the game, shooting a dominating 63 percent from behind the arc in the first half. Murry, junior guard Graham Hatch and Hannah each sunk one before the first media timeout to give the Shocks the early 9-5 advantage. Hannah found sophomore forward Aaron Ellis under the basket for a layup to stretch the lead further, 13-5.
Cleveland State used buckets from center Aaron Pogue and forward Nigel Ajere to close the gap, 13-9, before WSU caught fire for a 14-4 run. Hannah started the rally with a hustling three-point play while junior Gabe Blair knocked down two jumpers in a row. Murry drilled his second three of the half to push the lead to 27-13, forcing a Viking timeout.
Continuing to dominate the opening 20, Stutz stepped up to hit the Shockers' fifth three of the half. He followed that with a layup to double the Vikings' score, 34-17, with less than five minutes remaining in the first.
Viking guard Trevon Harmon pushed to shorten his team's deficit before the break, scoring a five-straight points. Despite his effort, he couldn't change the fact that the Shocker defense held the Vikings to just 27 percent from the floor. The Shockers took a commanding 38-24 lead into halftime.
Hannah and company picked up right where they left off to start the second half with an 11-4 run. Hannah and Hatch nailed back-to-back threes to give the Shockers their largest lead of the afternoon, 49-28. Moving the ball with both confidence and effectiveness, Hannah got himself open for another three and WSU took an insurmountable 25-point lead just five minutes into the final half.
In the meantime, WSU's defense controlled the game almost much as its offense. Nearly midway through the half, the Shocks held the Vikings to just 20 percent shooting while out rebounding the home team, 35-22. WSU would finish the game with a 47-30 advantage on the boards.
A Wichita State turnover led to a Pogue layup to cut the Shockers' lead 64-50. Although the Vikings would creep their way to a 13-point deficit, they wouldn't get any closer. The Shockers captured their first true road game of the season, 69-54.
The Shockers return home to play host to Alcorn State on Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
