FORT COLLINS, Colo -- The Wichita State women's basketball team (0-1) got a great start but a big Colorado State run midway through the first and 22 free throws helped the Rams move to 2-0 with a 85-60 win over the Shockers Sunday afternoon in WSU's season opener inside Moby Arena.
Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with a career-high 18 points, while
Marisah Henderson joined her in double figures with 11.
Kim Mestdagh led all players with 21 points on the afternoon.
Lankster led the Shockers out of the locker room and on to the board, scoring the first six WSU points before picking up a quick pair of fouls that sidelined her early on. Lankster's opening three pointer came after the Shockers had three looks at the basket on their opening possession. WSU's defense was the story early, forcing four turnovers in the first three minutes and not allowing a Colorado State field goal until Zoi Simmons' three-pointer with 16:07 to play in the half.
The Shockers extended their early lead to as many as nine after
Marisah Henderson's three-pointer from the right wing was good, giving WSU a 15-6 lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the opening frame.
A pair of baskets by CSU's Erin Cooke cut the Shocker lead to just 17-12 by the 12:30 mark, but Henderson's second three of the afternoon pushed the WSU lead back to eight.
The Rams ripped of a 9-1 run that tied the game at 21-21 following a Simmons jumper with 8:56 left in the first half. CSU took its first lead of the day after a Kim Metsdagh three-pointer at the 6:33 mark gave the Rams a 26-24 edge, but Henderson answered with her third three of the day to hand WSU the lead right back, 27-26 with six minutes left in the half.
Colorado State got back-to-back threes to regain the lead, pushing out to a four-point edge after a Bonnie Barbee trey at the 3:51 mark of the first. The Rams quickly extended the advantage to 11 after holding WSU scoreless from the field over the last five minutes of the half, capping a 30-11 run over the final 10 minutes of the opening frame.
The Rams' outside shooting hurt the Shockers in the first as CSU connected on 6-of-9 shots from the arc. But it was Colorado State's 18 first half trips to the free-throw line that proved to be the difference as CSU outscored the Shockers 12-4 at the stripe.
After a hot start the Shockers shot just 30.6-percent from the floor in the first, while CSU heated up to shoot 44.4-percent after making just one field goal in the opening four minutes.
The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second until Metstdagh's three extended CSU's lead to 53-39, by the under-16 timeout.
Jazimen Gordon's first points as a Shocker with 14:06 left closed the deficit to 15, but the Shockers' chances were dealt a huge blow as
Chynna Turner picked up three fouls in :26 seconds to foul out with 12:53 left to play.
Four more CSU free throws helped Colorado State extend the lead to 65-44 with just less than 11 minutes to play, and the Shockers could never recover, falling in the season opener for the first time since 2006.
Wichita State is next in action when it opens a five-game homestand against Western Illinois at 7:05 p.m., Friday.
