1/7/2009 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA -- The Wichita State athletics department is set to honor three women's athletics pioneers as Sue Bair, Natasha Fife and Yvonne Slingerland will be recognized on Shocker Pioneer Day, Jan. 24, in conjunction with WSU's women's basketball home game against Missouri State.

Fife was the first intercollegiate volleyball coach at Wichita State, Bair coached the first intercollegiate women's basketball team and Slingerland guided the first intercollegiate softball team at Wichita State, which began fielding intercollegiate women's teams in 1969.

The three pioneers of women's athletics at WSU will be recognized prior to the game on Jan. 24. A welcome reception will be held for the pioneers and all of their former players in attendance at halftime of the game. After the game, those that provided the foundation for WSU women's athletics today will meet with current female student-athletes and guests.

Former student-athletes can register for the event by clicking here. Tickets will be just $1 that day for the women's basketball game against MSU.
