Frazier Named WSU Athlete of the Week

1/5/2009 4:00:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan.--Senior power forward Daria Frazier was named the WSU Athlete of the Week for her terrific performance during the week of Dec. 29-Jan. 4.

Frazier put the Wichita State women's basketball team on her back and carried it to a 2-1 record last week, including its eighth win of the non-conference campaign, its first MVC win of the season and on Sunday the first Shocker victory over UNI since 2000, snapping a 20-game skid to the Panthers.

Frazier averaged 15.0 points 7.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals and 1.0 block per contest last week, including 19 points in WSU's win over UNI, two shy of her career high. She shot nearly 49-percent from the floor on the week, including a 6-for-9 effort against Mercer and a 8-for-16 performance on Sunday against the Panthers.

Frazier picked up her first career double-double on Sunday against UNI, tallying 19 points and a career-high 11 boards in the win. The Richfield, Minn., native also learned a new position against the Panthers, as WSU's normal power-forward took over point-guard duties after Marisah Henderson and Jacie Hoyt both fouled out with two minutes left to play.

Frazier kept her cool, connecting on a free throw with a minute left that stretched WSU's late-game lead to eight and helped seal WSU's win by keeping it a three-possession game in the final minute.

The senior was also solid at the stripe against Mercer, making all five of her attempts at the free-throw line in WSU's win over the Bears.
