EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Wichita State women's basketball team (10-10, 2-7) could not withstand an offensive blitz by Evansville (9-11, 2-7) in the second half as the Purple Aces handed the Shockers a 64-49 loss Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
The Shockers were haunted by an 0-for-16 effort from the three-point line, despite shooting 47-percent for the game inside the arc. Evansville made five three-pointers and shot 39-percent from the arc in the win.
Daria Frazier led the Shockers with 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while
Ashley Gladden added nine points for Wichita State. Junior
Marisah Henderson added a game-high seven assists, while Frazier led the club with seven rebounds. Robyn Jennings led four Evansville players in double-figures with 15 points, and also posted a game-best eight rebounds.
Wichita State's defense was the story early on, as
Jacie Hoyt stole the ball and passed to an open
Daria Frazier for the first points of the game, followed by a
Marcy Sudbeck block before UE finally got on the board with a Shannon Novosel layin with 17:18 left in the first.
The teams then traded points until a Novosel three-pointer gave Evansville its first lead of the afternoon at 7-6, with 15:15 left to play in the first. The Aces held the lead until
Ashley Gladden connected on the first of two free-throw attempts to tie the game, 9-9 with 13:17 left in the opening frame.
WSU's offense executed to near perfection early on, as WSU had an assist on each of its first seven baskets and shot better than 40-percent over the opening 10 minutes. The Aces hung tough however with an early edge on the boards, and defensive looks that forced WSU into five early turnovers.
Evansville used an 8-2 run midway through the first to break out to a 17-13 advantage after an Amy Gallagher layin with 8:49 left in the first. An Ashley Austin basket with 6:34 left extended the Evansville lead to 21-15, but WSU answered with a quick 6-0 run to tie the game, 21-21 following a
Marisah Henderson layin with 4:35 left in the half.
UE responded yet again however, as a pair of Austin free throws and a Robyn Jennings layin gave Evansville a four-point advantage before the Shocker backcourt found itself in serious foul trouble.
Jacie Hoyt and
Haleigh Lankster each picked up their third foul, but WSU wasn't thrown off track as a
Val Siemens jumper with 1:50 left tied the game at 25-25.
The teams traded baskets down the stretch and went to the break tied at 27-27. The Shockers shot 45-percent from the field in the first half, while holding Evansville to 37-percent shooting in the opening frame. After trailing on the boards early on the Shockers ended the half with a 19-17 edge on the glass, and had nine assists on 13 made baskets.
Evansville came out of the locker room firing, as Novosel sank a three-pointer 26 seconds into the second that sparked a 10-2 run over the first five minutes of the half. Back-to-back buckets by the Shockers cut the deficit to four by the 15-minute mark but UE continued its hot hand, using a Gallagher basket with 10:29 left to extend the advantage to seven, 46-39.
Daria Frazier's 18th point of the day cut the WSU deficit to five with just under 10-minutes to play, but a huge three-pointer from Robyn Jennings pushed Evansville's lead to eight, 49-41 with 9-minutes left to play, and the Aces never looked back.
UE extended the lead to as many as 15 down the stretch in the winning effort.
The Shockers are next in action when WSU returns home to face Drake at 7:05 p.m., Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
