CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Wichita State women's basketball team (10-8, 2-5) took Southern Illinois (4-12, 0-7), to overtime looking for its first road win of the season, but the Salukis got a big three-pointer from Alex Hart to turn back the Shockers, 76-66, in overtime, Thursday evening inside SIU Arena.

Val Siemens tied her season high with a team-best 15 points with six boards and two steals in 41 minutes. Daria Frazier also had 15 points for the Shockers, while Haleigh Lankster scored seven and had three steals. Marcy Sudbeck scored 13 points and 12 boards to post her eighth double-double of the season, chipping in two blocks in 36 minutes of action.

SIU's Jasmine Gibson scored 20 points to pace the Salukis, while Erica Smith chipped in a double-double with four assists to help guide SIU to its first Valley win of the season.

The Salukis raced out to a 12-4 lead over the first five minutes, sinking five of their first seven shots on the night coupled with four early Shocker miscues to give SIU the advantage right out of the gate.

Wichita State answered with a 13-4 run of its own on the strength of back-to-back three-pointers from Val Siemens and Jacie Hoyt, allowing WSU to take a 17-16 lead with 11:30 left in the first. A layin by Marisah Henderson helped extend the Shocker lead to 22-18 by the 10-minute mark of the first, but back-to-back three-pointers from SIU's Kaci Bailey sparked an 8-0 Saluki run that gave SIU a 26-22 edge with seven minutes left in the first.

Four-straight free throws from Daria Frazier tied the game at 26-26 by the 3:46 mark of the first, and the teams traded points down the stretch to go to the break tied at 31-31.

The Shockers shot 41-percent from the floor in the first frame, while SIU shot 45-percent from the floor including a 57-percent clip from the arc after making its first four three-point attempts. WSU was 5-for-5 at the free-throw line and held a 18-17 advantage on the boards at the break.

The teams traded points in the opening minutes of the second before a 7-0 Saluki run forced the Shockers to burn a timeout with 15:18 left in the second. Kaci Bailey's third three-pointer of the night capped the rally, pushing SIU out to a 38-33 lead over WSU nearly five minutes after the break.

A three-point play by Ashley Gladden cut the deficit to two at 38-36 with 13:49 left, but Frazier picked up her fourth foul with 13:30 left and SIU answered with an 11-2 run capped by an Alex Hart three-pointer with 10:45 left that pushed the Salukis out to a 49-38 lead.

The Shockers responded yet again, using a 10-0 run to pull within one after Marcy Sudbeck's putback with 7:47 left cut the deficit to 49-47. Sudbeck was fouled and connected on the free throw, the ninth-straight of the evening for the Shockers as a team, cutting SIU's lead to just one.

In a game full of scoring runs, Southern Illinois then posted one of the most important, a 9-2 run capped by back-to-back baskets by Alex Hart that pushed SIU back out to a 60-52 lead with 4:30 left to play. WSU got back-to-back baskets to close to within 60-56, but Jasmine Gibson's jumper with 3:47 left extended the Saluki advantage to 62-56.

A 5-0 run by Daria Frazier pulled the Shockers to within one, 62-61, following a three-point play with 2:29 left, but Gibson answered again to give SIU a 64-61. Frazier responded with another bucket to close the deficit to 64-63, but fouled out with 1:29 left after going for a rebound. Katrina Swingler's 1-of-2 trip to the line gave SIU a 65-63 edge.

Haleigh Lankster then stole the ball at midcourt, and Sudbeck tied the game with a layin with :40 seconds left. SIU had a look in the final seconds, but Sudbeck blocked a shot to give WSU a chance to win the game in regulation with :14.9 left to play. WSU could not get a shot off however, and after trailing by as many as 12 points in the second, the Shockers sent the game into the extra period for the second time in the last three games.

WSU missed its first three shots in the extra frame, and coupled with two turnovers SIU raced out to an 8-point lead thanks to a three-point play by Gibson and a three-pointer by Hart with 1:19 left to play in overtime, putting the game out of reach for WSU. The Shockers managed to put up just one point in the overtime period, as SIU connected on big shots down the stretch and continued to shut the Shockers down defensively in the final minutes.

WSU shot 39.7-percent on the night, but SIU shot 46-percent in the winning effort. The Shockers were outrebounded 42-38, but WSU did make 11-of-13 attempts at the free-throw line on the night. SIU sank a total of eight three-pointers on the night, shooting 44-percent from the arc.

The Shockers are next in action at 4 p.m., Saturday at Evansville.
