Shockers Put Away Bears, 66-62

WICHITA ? Senior Marcy Sudbeck scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Wichita State (10-8, 2-5) to a victory over Missouri State (5-13, 1-6) on Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Marisah Henderson chipped in 12 points and five assists for the Shockers, while Ashley Gladden grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Freshman Casey Garrison scored 21 points and secured 13 rebounds to lead the way for Missouri State.

After a Frazier layin and a free throw by Sudbeck, the Shockers pushed the lead to four, 63-59, with 1:37 remaining.

But, some missed opportunities at the free throw allowed MSU to pull within one, 63-62, with the ball and 21 seconds left. The Bears got the ball in to Maggie Dwyer for a layup that fell off the front of the rim. An ensuing jump ball gave the Shockers the possession.

Henderson made 1-of-2 to keep the Shocker lead at only two, but WSU dodged another bullet when Casey Garrison missed a runner from the baseline.

Haleigh Lankster grabbed the rebound and put the game away with two free throws on the other end.

Sudbeck opened with a hot start for the Shockers, scoring eight of the team's first nine points to help the Shockers to an early one-point advantage, 9-8, at the 15:10 mark.

A quick 7-0 run by the Bears turned the Shocker lead into a six-point deficit before Marisah Henderson knocked down a jumper to bring the score to 15-11 at the under-12 media timeout.

Frazier came out of the timeout and hit a jumper in the lane to cut the lead to just two. Val Siemens kept it close over the next couple minutes with a three-pointer, and Jacie Hoyt tied it up at 20 with another trey from the corner with 8:35 to play.

Sudbeck tossed in two more layups on assists from Henderson to give the Shockers a three-point lead, 24-21 with 6:34 left in the half.

Missouri State's Casey Garrison continued her play on the offensive glass getting the Bears back to within one, but Sudbeck carried the load again with a conventional three-point play for a four-point Shocker lead followed by a turnaround jumper in the lane, capping an 18-6 run for the Shockers that covered 6:45 and built a 32-25 lead.

A 6-1 run to close the half for Missouri State, led by Garrison, kept the score close heading into the intermission, 33-31.

Sudbeck finished the half with 18 points and four rebounds, while MSU's Garrison score 13 points and pulled down seven boards.

After Missouri State opened the second half with a bucket from Lacey Boshe, the Shockers answered great defense and an 8-0 run fueled by back-to-back steals from Henderson that the Shockers converted into points. With the run, the lead grew to 41-33.

Missouri State came right back with a 7-0 run of their own to get the score within one, but Sudbeck answered back as she had all game with three more points of her own to keep the Shocker lead at four, 46-42 at the 9:00 mark.

The Bears caught fire over a four-minute stretch knocking down four threes and a long two-pointer to erase a five-point Shocker lead and turn it into a 57-53 advantage with 5:32 remaining.

Sudbeck kept it close for WSU pushing her point total past her career-high mark and tying the game at 57-57 into the four-minute media timeout.

The Shockers return to action next Thursday at Southern Illinois with the tip scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
