Box Score WICHITA, Kan.? The Wichita State men's basketball team used a 12-0 run to open the second half and erase a seven-point halftime deficit en route to a 64-58 win over Illinois State (16-3, 5-3) Wednesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Toure' Murry paced the Shockers (8-11, 2-6) with 16 points while Ramon Clemente and Aaron Ellis posted season-highs each finishing with 14 points.
Osiris Eldridge led the way for the Redbirds with 16 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Lloyd Phillips and Emmanuel Holloway also posted double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Clemente's scoring onslaught put the Shockers ahead with a jumper and went on to score nine of the Shockers first 15 points of the half to put WSU up 37-36 at the 15:16 mark.
By the 11:35 mark, ISU had regained the lead on a Holloway jumper and a Phillips trey, 39-28. Holloway made it a six-point lead with another trey and a buck at the 10:46 mark.
WSU then battled back to tie it at 44-44 at the 9:01 mark with a Graham Hatch layup and then Durley gave WSU the lead with 7:33 left with a jumper, 46-44.
The two teams traded baskets before Eldridge brought it to one at 50-49 with 4:29 left. Neither team scored over the next 1:45 when Phillips made two free throws to put ISU up 51-50.
Hawkins put the Shockers back on top with a trey, 53-51 at the 2:15 mark, and Murry made the lead five with another trey after a Redbird miss at the 1:35 mark.
With a little more than a minute remaining, the Redbirds called a timeout. Murry quickly stole an Illinois State pass to return the possession to the Shockers, and followed that up with a drive to the basket. Drawing the foul, Murry sunk both free throws to put the home team ahead, 58-51.
Murry converted his second steal in as many minutes into a lay up, putting the game out of reach for the Redbirds, 60-51. A long three from Lloyd Phillips would pull the Redbirds closer, but a Hatch free-throw provided the final nail in the coffin and gave WSU its second-straight win.
After shooting just 35 percent in the first half, WSU caught fire in the second half hitting 16-of-22 shots for a scorching 73 percent.
Illinois State took a 7-6 lead into the first media break after getting on the scoreboard first with an Eldridge three from the corner.
Eldridge scored ISU's next seven points to extend the Redbirds' lead to four at 14-10 while a Clemente layup and Murry jumper kept WSU's offense alive.
Out of the 12-minute media break, ISU extended the lead to six at 16-10 with a quick two-points from Oguchi.
The two teams traded baskets before WSU went on a 8-0 run to bring it to within one, 19-18 at 7:05, highlighted by a A.J. Hawkins putback dunk off a Hannah miss. Odiakosa's layup at the 6:20 mark kept it a two bucket ISU lead.
ISU opened a streak of its own on two dunks and a three-pointer by Holloway at the 4:01 mark to take a 26-18 lead.
Ellis stopped the run with a jumper at the 3:27 mark as the team's leader to that point with six points.
Phillips' bucket at the 1:46 mark extended ISU's lead to eight at 28-20, and neither team scored during the next 1:43 when an interntional foul by Holloway put Murry at the line. Murry hit the first of two shots to make it 28-21 headed into the half.
ISU out-shot the Shockers, 52 percent to 35 percent in the first frame, and were led by Eldridges's four-of-eight effort, while Ellis's six point continued to lead WSU into the half.
