Men's Basketball Wichita State

Shocks Soar Past Bluejays, 74-61

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's basketball team raced to a 13-3 lead and never looked back in a 74-61 win over Creighton (14-5, 4-3) to improve to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play in front of a sold-out and blacked-out Charles Koch Arena.

Toure' Murry led the way for WSU with 17 points. Ramon Clemente just missed another double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds while Clevin Hannah had 10 points and five assists.

The Bluejays were led by 20 points from Booker Woodfox and Antoine Young's 12 points.

The Shockers jumped out to an early 13-3 lead thanks to an active defense and hot shooting. Garrett Stutz got WSU on the board with his second three-pointer of the season from the right-wing. Murry followed with a personal 8-0 run that included two-three pointers and a wide open layup. Defensively the Shockers man-to-man and zone defense was suffocating, holding the Bluejays to just 8-percent shooting, connecting on just one of their first 12 shots.

WSU extended its lead with an 8-0 run that included three-pointers by Clevin Hannah and Reggie Chamberlain. Chamberlain's three pushed the lead to 14, 27-13, with four and a half minutes to play in the half.

CU closed the gap before the half as Woodfox hit a three-pointer and running jumper as part of a 7-2 run. With just two seconds to play in the half Durley rebounded a Murry miss and hit the put-back to give WSU a 31-21 lead at the half.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half and a dunk by A.J. Hawkins brought the sold-out crowd to its feet and gave WSU a 40-28 lead. The Bluejays began to chip away at the lead with free-throws, defense and outside shooting. Six free-throws and a Casey Harriman three-pointer made up a 9-2 CU run to close the gap to just six, 58-52, with just over seven minutes to play.

A layup by Hawkins put the Shocks up by double-digits. Hannah's three-pointer gave WSU its largest lead of the game, 69-55, with three minutes on the clock. CU rallied again and put together a 7-0 run in a 40-second span but a Murry jumper put an end to the threat.

The Shockers ate up the last 1:04 of the game as Clemente and Aaron Ellis grabbed rebounds of missed shots to melt the clock as WSU snapped a six-game losing streak with the 74-61 win.

WSU's defense held the Bluejays to just 33-percent shooting from the field, including just 31-percent from three-point range. Offensively the Shockers received contributions from just about everyone as nine of 10 Shockers scored. Ellis and Graham Hatch provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight points apiece and connecting on seven-of-10 shooting combined.

The Shockers owned the boards all game and finished with a 47-22 rebounding edge. Every Shocker player had at least one rebound, led by Clemente and Ellis each pulling down nine boards.

WSU is back in action on Wed., Jan. 21 when Illinois State comes to Charles Koch Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m., and all the action can be seen on Kansas Now 22.
