Sycamores Top Shocks, 52-48

1/15/2009 9:45:00 PM

WICHITA ? Senior Daria Frazier posted 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, but the Shockers couldn't hold off a late rally, dropping a 52-48 decision to Indiana State Thursday evening in front of 1,459 fans inside Charles Koch Arena.

Frazier's second double-double of the season paced the Shockers in both points and rebounds, while Marcy Sudbeck and Haleigh Lankster each added 10 points for WSU.

Indiana State's Kelsey Luna led all scorers with 19 points behind a five-for-nine effort from long range.

The Sycamores needed just 28 seconds to put their first points on the board as Luna nailed a wide open three from the far corner. Ashley Gladden answered with a Shocker layup on the ensuing possession, but another trey by Deja Mattox gave Indiana State a 6-2 lead less than a minute into the contest.

The Shockers clawed back over the next five minutes, using their inside game to their advantage. Four quick points by Marcy Sudbeck, combined with layups from Ashley Gladden and Daria Frazier gave the Shockers an 8-7 advantage by the 14 minute mark.

WSU found itself in a constant game of catch up for the next eight minutes. Jacie Hoyt answered a five-point Sycamore spurt with a trey to bring the Shockers within one, 12-11, at the 11 minute mark. Minutes later, Frazier single-handedly answered another Indiana State five-point spurt with back-to-back lay-ups, once again bringing the Shocks within two, 19-17 at the seven minute mark.

Val Siemens gave WSU its first lead of the night on a three pointer from the far elbow at the 6:49 mark, and it was a sprint to halftime from that point. The teams traded leads until the 20-second mark, when Sarah Paul drained a three-pointer that gave the Sycamores their 27-24 advantage at halftime.

The see-saw battle continued into the second half. Luna opened play with three-balls on back-to-back possessions, allowing the Sycamores to tie their largest lead of the night, a seven-point, 33-26 advantage less than 90 seconds into the half. A 5-2 spurt by WSU brought the Shockers within three, 34-31, by the 15 minute mark, but back-to-back jumpers by Indiana State's Kara Schilli gave the visitors yet another seven-point cushion.

That's when Frazier took over. Back-to-back free throws and a lay-up off a nifty post move brought the Shocks within three yet again, 38-35, by the 11-minute mark. Frazier sparked an 10-2 run that gave the Shocks a brief 41-40 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Luna responded quickly for the Sycamores with a transition lay-up on the ensuing possession to reclaim the 42-41 lead with six minutes to play.

Before most of the fans in Koch Arena could blink an eye, Luna drained another trey to give the visitors a 45-41 edge, but Lankster responded on the following possession to keep things interesting at 45-44 with 5:14 to play.

Once again, Frazier stepped to the plate for the Shockers, grabbing a rebound off a Luna miss and converting it into two quick points with a lay-up on the other end. A Sudbeck lay-up on the following possession gave WSU a 48-45 advantage with 3:35 remaining, but Indiana State held WSU in check for the remainder of the game, while scoring the final seven points of the game en route to the 52-48 final margin.

The Shockers shot 38.5 percent from the floor, and out-rebounded Indiana State 45-28, but turnovers proved to be the difference maker. WSU turned the ball over 20 times to the Sycamores' 10 turnovers.

The Shockers are back in action Saturday when they host Illinois State at 7:35 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
