AUGUSTA, Kan. ? Senior Kellyn Johnson paced the women, while
freshman Trace Kendrick was the top finisher for the men in the rain-soaked 60th
Annual J.K. Gold Classic at the RAFT Golf Course in Augusta, Kan.
Both the men's and women's team finished in second place as
a group, each coming in behind team champion Kansas State. The men finished
just three total team points behind KSU while, the women scored 39 to just 21
for the Wildcats.
Johnson was the top finisher for the Shockers, placing
second behind Kansas State's Beverly Ramos. Johnson sloshed through the wet,
muddy conditions to cover the four-kilometer course in 14:00.43. Senior Kimber
Lemon was next across the line for the Shocker women, finishing in sixth with a
time of 14:29.57. Jenna Wood (14:47.58) and Danielle Walker (15:10.61) each
placed in the top 10 finishing in ninth and 10th, respectively.
Kendrick, a newcomer from Scott City, Kan., was the top
finisher for the Shocker men placed third with a 6K-time of 19:18.70. Senior
Bryce Forward placed sixth for WSU with a time of 19:39.78, while fellow
freshmen Kevin Pendergast (19:47.77) and Scott Ufford (20:04.12) placed eighth
and 11th, respectively.
The Shockers will have a week off before traveling to this
year's MVC Championship site, Springfield, Ill., for the Missouri State Cross
Country Classic on Sept. 20.
