Springfield, Mo. -- Olivia Martinez paced the Shocker women, while
Scott Reed made his season debut to lead the men at the Missouri State Cross Country Invitational in Springfield, Ill.
The Shocker women, without the services of frontrunner
Kellyn Johnson, finished second as a team, 13 points behind Valley foe Missouri State, while the men placed third, 12 points behind Morehead State.
"I was pretty excited about the way we ran today," Head Coach Marc Burns said. "It was great to have
Scott Reed back for the men, and to see Olivia (Martinez) and Irene (Kosgei) slide up there was awesome."
Martinez, a sophomore, led four Shockers in the top ten for the women, placing fifth. Martinez covered the five-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 36.60 seconds, while Kimber Lemon,
Irene Kosgei, and Jenna Wood placed seventh, eighth, and ninth. Lemon completed the race in 18:44.10, while Kosgei was three seconds back and Wood four seconds behind Lemon.
On the men's side, Reed saw his first action of the season after nursing an IT band injury and didn't disappoint his teammates or coaching staff. Reed was the first Shocker across the line, placing fifth, to lead three Shockers in the top ten. Reed finished the eight-kilometer course in 25:56.65, while freshman
Trace Kendrick placed sixth (26:08.45) and senior Bryce Forward placed 10th (26:44.31).
Kendrick's fellow freshman
Scott Ufford placed 13th for the Shockers, with a time of 27:08.64.
"It was the first 8k for freshman," Burns said. "Trace moved up over the last 2k. We counted on some freshmen. I was impressed with those guys. The team is starting to come together."
The Shockers will have a week off before traveling to Stillwater, Okla., for the Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State University on Oct. 4.
