Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (24-4, 5-1 MVC) took the conference series against Missouri State (18-10, 5-4 MVC) as the Shockers topped the Bears, 9-5, in game three.
The Bears only managed three base runners through five innings. The first two came on free passes in the second and fourth from starter Anthony Capra and the first MSU hit was a single by Ben Carlson in the fifth.
WSU's Dusty Coleman ripped one up the middle for a base hit in the second and Josh Workman brought him around with a homerun to give the Shockers an early 2-0 lead.
A walk to Conor Gillaspie would result in another run for the Shockers in the third. Coleman sent a pitch sailing down the left field line, staying fair and chalking up a double. Josh Workman grounded out to the right side, giving Gillaspie the chance to score from third.
It was the sixth inning before the Bears got on the board with two hits and a sacrifice. Ben Woodbury doubled between the right and center fielder and then took third with a stolen base. Chris Playter hit a fielder's choice and the defense became caught up with the runner at third, allowing Playter to reach first. Woodbury made a stretch for home, but dove back to third and avoided the tag as the groundball was hit to the left side. Nolan Keane hit a sacrifice fly to right field brining in the Bears' first run. Brayden Drake followed it up with a triple off the right field wall. Right fielder Ryan Jones gave chase to the hit and met the wall with force. The sophomore was shaken up on the play, but would stay in the game.
Workman worked a full count for a lead off walk in the bottom half of the frame. Clinton McKeever took one back up the middle and Kenny Williams, Jr., homered for the first time in his collegiate career. Back-to-back singles by Andy Dirks and Ryan Jones put two aboard for a Gillaspie homerun, his third of the year, giving WSU a 9-2 lead.
Christian Overstreet came off the bench for a pinch hit appearance and delivered a homerun in the top of the seventh that cut the score to 9-5. Carlson was on board with a walk and Kyle Paul had reached on a single to center field before the three-run blast.
Capra earned the win and improved to 5-0 in six innings with two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five. Andy Womack threw 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Grant Muncrief faced five batters and got one out.
Wichita State travels to Kansas State on Tuesday, before hosting Oklahoma Wednesday night. Both games start at 7 p.m. and can be heard live on KNSS 1330 or www.shockerradio.com. Tuesday's game will also air live on Kansas Now 22.
