Box Score NORMAN, Okla.- Wichita State (33-11) and Oklahoma combined for 33 hits, but the
Sooners came out on top, 12-11, with a game-winning hit from Mike Gosse in
the 10th inning.
WSU's Clint McKeever took the pressure of playing near his hometown in stride, delivering an impressive show on first and at the plate. The Oklahoma City native was on the receiving end of spectacular plays and turned in a 4-for-5 performance on offense.
Wichita State jumped on the board early, scoring two in its first at bats. Back-to-back walks to Ryan Jones and Conor Gillaspie put two on and a single by Dusty Coleman loaded the bases. McKeever took his first single into the left-center gap, rounding Jones and Gillaspie.
Oklahoma responded immediately with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. With two outs, consecutive base hits through the right side kept the inning going and J.T. Wise plated the runs with a double down the left field line.
A walk to Coleman would result in a temporary 3-2 lead for the Shockers in the third inning. Coleman stole second and crossed on a McKeever single that mirrored the sophomore's first hit.
The third out again eluded Wichita State at an important time in the fourth with runners threatening at first and second. Spencer Selby took one long over the left-center fence to take a 5-3 advantage, before WSU could manage the final out. Aaron Baker was on board with a single to right field and Wise had a hit the opposite way before Selby jacked his three-run homer.
A solo shot by Jamie Johnson led off the Sooner fifth and gave WSU a three-run lead.
The Shockers finally strung together some hits in the sixth to get a large inning of offense. Four-straight singles by Tyler Weber, Ryan Engrav, Andy Dirks and Jones moved runners base-to-base, scoring one run. Gillaspie followed with a gapper off of the left-center wall, clearing the bases with a triple. Coleman grounded out to short, but it was enough to bring in the runner at third and regain an 8-6 lead.
Wichita State added two in the top of the ninth for a little insurance. Three singles by Coleman, McKeever and Taylor Brown brought around one and a groundout from Kenny Williams, Jr., drove home McKeever.
WSU tried to stretch reliever Logan Hoch for a new career high in innings, leaving him on the mound for the ninth. The plan turned sour as singles to left field by Johnson and Gosse were costly when Baker lifted a homerun to right field, tying the game at 10 each.
Dirks had a solo bomb in the top of the tenth for his eighth of the year, but it was not enough as OU rallied with two outs in the bottom half. Johnson doubled to left field as Williams came too far in on a fly ball. Aljay Davis drew a walk and Gosse delivered a hit down the right field line, allowing both runners to score and win the game.
Wichita State and Northern Iowa, tied atop the Valley standings, begin a three-game conference series staring Friday at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
