Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Wichita State (33-9, 11-4) took the lead in the top of the ninth but could not hold off Indiana State (12-27, 6-9) as the Sycamores rallied from three down in the bottom of the inning to win, 8-7, Sunday at Sycamore Field.

The loss snaps a 10-game winning streak against INS and an 11-game winning streak by the Shockers in Terre Haute.

The Sycamores hit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. Nick Ciolli led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pascual Del Real doubled home Ciolli for his first RBI of the series. ISU took a 2-0 lead when Sean Osborne singled, scoring Del Real from second.

WSU stormed back to take the lead in the fourth as Clint McKeever led off the inning with a double down the left field line. McKeever moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Tyler Weber. With two outs Taylor Brown delivered with an RBI double and advanced to third on the throw home. Andy Dirks hit a double to the gap in left-center to score Brown and give the Shockers a 3-2 lead.

INS tied the score in the fifth with some help from the WSU defense. After allowing Chris Schmidt and Brady Shoemaker to reach base via a single and a walk, Ciolli put the 1-1 pitch in play and a wild throw by McKeever allowed Schmidt to score from second.

The Shockers took the lead in the sixth as Dirks delivered again with an RBI single to score Kenny Williams. However INS tied the game for the second time when Schmidt singled to score Osborne in the bottom half of the inning.

WSU took the lead in the top of the ninth with just one hit in the inning. After getting Ryan Jones to strike out swinging to begin the inning INS pitcher David Gurbach walked three of the next four hitters to load the bases. Weber grounded to third, but reached base safely as third baseman Brian Ramirez bobbled the ball and threw late to first giving the Shockers a 5-4 lead.

Williams added some insurance with a two-RBI double for a 7-4 lead. Weber was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning.

The Sycamores followed suit and managed to do some damage in the bottom of the ninth without having to hit the ball. Shoemaker led off the inning being hit by a pitch. After a pop up to second base, WSU pitcher Logan Hoch got what looked to be the makings of a game-ending double-play as Ciolli hit a ground ball back to the mound. Hoch threw high to shortstop Dusty Coleman covering at second base allowing the inning to continue.

Cole Standridge pinch hit and walked to load the bases. Coleman came in to pitch and gave up singles to Del Real and Osborne to tie the game, 7-7. Del Real moved to third on the Osborne single and scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Andy Womack.

Williams led the Shockers at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Starter Anthony Capra got his first no-decision of the season, going five innings allowing five hits and three runs, only two of which were earned.

Despite the loss WSU took the series, 2-1, and have yet to lose an MVC series this season. Dirks finished the series going 8-for-14 with two doubles and a home run while collecting eight RBI and scoring eight runs. Gillaspie also finished with eight RBI on the weekend thanks in part to three home runs, one of which was a grand slam.

The Shockers take on a pair of Big 12 foes next week as Kansas State comes to Eck Stadium on Tues., April 29, followed by a trip to Norman, Okla., for a matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners. WSU sits in a tie atop the MVC standings with Northern Iowa at 11-4. The Panthers and Shockers will square-off in a weekend series May 2-4 at Eck Stadium.
