Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Wichita State wrapped up game one Saturday afternoon with a 14-7 win over Indiana State.
Indiana State took a brief lead in the first with two hits and a sacrifice bunt before Dusty Coleman blasted a grand slam in the top of the third to give the Shockers a 4-1 advantage. Andy Dirks and Ryan Jones drew back-to-back walks on eight-straight balls and Conor Gillaspie singled to right field to load the bases. Coleman, back in the clean up spot, did his job with a homerun to straight-away center field.
The Sycamores responded with two runs in the fourth to cut the lead, 4-3. Musgrave gave up a lead off hit to Nick Ciolli. A walk to Pascual Del Real put two on, and two consecutive singles by Ryan Strausborger and David Brumagin plated the runs.
Gillaspie hit his fourth homerun of the year in the fifth to stretch the score to 5-3.
Mitch Caster was hit by the first pitch of the sixth inning and Clint McKeever followed with a 4-0 walk. Michael Manus got Kenny Williams, Jr., on strikes, but struggled to find the zone against Kyle Sisney, throwing him four balls as well. Dirks delivered a two RBI single through the right side that extended the lead, 7-3.
With two outs in the eighth, three-consecutive singles by Sisney, Dirks and Jones brought home another insurance run.
Indiana State never seemed to completely go away, nagging the Shockers with hard hits scattered throughout the game. The Sycamores rallied in the bottom half after the bases were loaded on free passes by Musgrave and reliever Khol Nanney. A double play gave the Shockers two quick outs, but Ciolli scored on the play and ISU wasn't done. Three-straight singles off of Nanney drove in one run and two wild pitches, one by reliever Tyler Fleming, allowed two more to score. The Sycamores had come within one before Fleming got the last out and the game moved on to the shortened ninth inning.
Wichita State had an 8-7 lead and runners at first and second with one out in the top of the ninth when the game was suspended due to lightening and impending weather.
After play had resumed Saturday afternoon, three walks, all on four-straight balls, loaded the bases with two outs. Dirks doubled down the left field line to drive in two and leave two runners on. Jones walked to again load the bags full of Shockers and Gillaspie followed with a homerun over the right-center field fence for WSU's second grand slam of the game. The last time this occurred was 1998. Coleman flied out on the first pitch in the next at bat to end the inning, but Wichita State had taken a significant, 14-7, lead over the Sycamores.
Tyler Fleming came out on Saturday to finish up the game and got three outs, facing four batters, to hold the 14-7 score in place.
