Men's Tennis Ousts Aggies, 6-1

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team improved to 14-3 on the season with a 6-1 win over New Mexico State Friday afternoon at Genesis Health Club.

The Shockers took the early advantage, winning the doubles point for the second-straight match. New Mexico State won the No. 2 doubles match when Gustave Diep and Jim Brouleau defeated WSU's Albert Ballesta and Thiago Dos Santos 8-4, but the Shockers rallied to win the remaining two doubles matches in 9-7 thrillers. WSU's Tiago Espirito Santo and Matt Teivans won the No. 1 match by defeating NMSU's Roman Stoisavljevic and Eduardo Salas, while the No. 3 match went to WSU's Jonathan Obrist and Kevin Gardner, who defeated Aggie foes Stefan McKinney and Jeff Pfeifer.

Adrian Chermaci pushed the Shockers lead to 2-0 in singles competition. The Shocker freshman made quick work of NMSU's Eduardo Salas, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 match and earned his third-straight win. Another Shocker freshman gave the Shockers a 3-0 advantage. Matt Teivans won his second-straight singles match, defeating NMSU's Jeff Pfeifer 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 match to bring the Shockers to within on singles win of a victory.

The Aggies attempted a rally, starting in the No. 3 match when freshman Jim Brouleau defeated WSU's Thiago Dos Santos in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, but the rally was stifled when Albert Ballesta stole the No. 2 match from NMSU's Roman Stoisavljevic in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Shockers their third straight win.

The Shockers won both remaining matches. Jonathan Obrist defeated Stefan McKinney in the No. 4 match, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Tiago Espirito Santo finished the dual with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win over NMSU's Gustave Diep in the No. 1 match.

With the win the Shockers improve to 14-3 on the season. They return to conference play Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Bradley. Because of expected cold and windy weather, the match will be played at Genesis Health Club.
