WICHITA -- Wichita State (15-7) needed a seven-run fifth to come from behind but the Shockers slugged their way to a sixth-straight win as WSU turned back UMKC (2-8), 9-4, Saturday night in game six of the 2008 Shocker Invitational at Wilkins Stadium.

Britnee Barnett had a huge day for the Shockers at the plate as she tied a career-high with four RBI on a 3-for-4 performance at the dish. Kiersten Dixon posted two RBI as well, while Jamie Stanclift recorded a career-best three hits and leadoff hitter Katie McGeeney scored two runs.

The Shockers got on the board first when Britnee Barnett singled around Katie McGeeney to give WSU a 1-0 lead. Barnett came home on a fly ball by freshman Heather Gerritse that was dropped by left-fielder Ashley Whiteside that allowed the run to score giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead.

UMKC answered with a three-run double in the third by Julie Hartung, giving the Kangaroos a 3-2 lead on one swing of the bat. An Alicia Baker RBI single in the fifth brought home Monica Canisales to give UMKC a 4-2 lead. The run ended Jamie Hull's first collegiate start, as the freshman worked 4.1 innings giving up four runs and walking three. Brianna Smet (6-0) came on to work the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win, giving up just one hit while striking out one.

The Shockers wasted no time in responding, putting up seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. The inning started with two straight singles from Katie McGeeney and Kara L'Hillier put two on for Barnett who then sent a Samantha Hurst pitch over the right center wall to give the Shockers a 5-4 lead. Cynthia Verhulst provided an encore one batter later, as she took a 1-2 pitch over the left-center wall to give WSU a 6-4 lead. A two-out triple by Kiersten Dixon brought home Caley Roberts and Jamie Stanclift to put the Shocks up 8-4 after five. Dixon then stole home after McGeeney purposely got caught in a rundown, putting the Shockers up 9-4.

It was all the offense Smet would need as she retired the Kangaroos on 25 pitches to give WSU their sixth-straight win.

WSU returns to action at 1 p.m., tomorrow against Iowa State in the final day of the 2008 Shocker Invitational.
