NORMAL, Ill. - Wichita State (13-3) run-ruled Illinois State 12-1 before defeating the Redbirds, 6-4, Saturday afternoon as part of a doubleheader in Normal, Ill.

GAME ONE

In game one, Wichita State had plenty of offensive and was strong on defense as well, powering over Illinois State, 12-1, in seven innings.

Illinois State's one run came early in the first inning after a lead off double by Mike Stalowy scored on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. But that was all that the Redbirds would manage as the Shockers' defense was flawless and starter Rob Musgrave was dominate on the mound.

Musgrave pitched the complete game, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk, while striking out eight in the seven-inning stretch.

A solo homerun by Tyler Weber in the second inning tied the game at one and the Shockers took off from there.

Kenny Williams, Jr. started a five-run third inning with a triple to right field. Andy Dirks brought him in with a home run, collecting two RBI on the way. The hits continued as Ryan Jones doubled to center field and Conor Gillaspie plated a run with a single back up the middle. Dusty Coleman drew a walk and Josh Workman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gillaspie was out on a double play by Clinton McKeever, but Weber delivered a double to left field, driving in two more runs before the inning was over.

A sacrifice fly by McKeever in the top of the fifth brought in Coleman who was on board after being plunked. Coleman had advanced to second after a walk to Workman and a double steal moved the runners to second and third, allowing Coleman to easily score and WSU went ahead 6-1.

Wichita State capped the scoring and secured the run-rule in the sixth with another five-run inning. Tyler Hill started with a single and Williams hit his second triple of the game to bring the runner home. Jones walked and Gillaspie singled, driving in another run. Coleman's sacrifice fly crossed Jones and a Redbird fielding error allowed Gillaspie and Workman to score.

The homeruns were Dirks' third and Weber's second of the season. Musgrave improved to 3-0 with the win.

GAME TWO

The second game was a little closer, but the Shockers still managed a 6-4 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Wichita State was able to break through with two runs on two hits and three ISU errors. Josh Workman hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a fielding miscue by the center fielder, Corey Maines. Cody Lassley reached safely on another misplayed ball, this time by first baseman Mike Stalowy. One run scored on a Kenny Williams, Jr., single and the other run scored on the same play as Maines picked up his second error of the inning.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Dusty Coleman was hit by a pitch and Tyler Weber followed with a single through the right side. Ryan Copeland hit Workman with a pitch and Lassley cleared the bases with a double into the left-center gap, giving the Shockers, 5-0.

Illinois State made a come back in the seventh and eighth with two runs in each inning, cutting the lead to 5-4. Kevin Konsler doubled off of Logan Hoch and Ronnie Calvard took his first pitch throught the right side for a single. Dan Weston grounded into a double play, erasing Calivard but Konsler scored and the Shockers were not clear of trouble. Cole Marty drew a walk on a full count and crossed on a single by Kevin Tokarski.

Kyle Cherney had a one-out double to left field to spark the eighth inning. Konsler singled to right field, plated Cherney and reached second on a fielding error by Ryan Jones. Konsler moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Fleming.

The runs were not enough, however, as Wichita State added one more to move ahead, 6-4, in the top of the ninth. A Tyler Hill double brought home Workman who had previously reached on a single up the middle.

Workman finished at 2-for-3 and scored half of the Shockers' runs.

Aaron Shafer picked up the win and moved to 3-1 on the year. The junior right-hander threw six scoreless innings, giving up two walks and three hits with nine strikeouts.

Wichita State will wrap up the series with Illinois State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
