WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team improved to 8-1 Saturday with a 5-0 win over Oral Roberts in Day 2 of the Shocker Classic.
The Shockers took the early 1-0 advantage by taking two of three doubles matches from the Eagles. In the No. 2 match, Thiago Dos Santos and Albert Ballesta cruised to an 8-2 win over ORU's Denis Troyke and Clemons Geercken, while Kevin Gardner and Jonathan Obrist took the No. 3 match in an 8-1 decision over the Eagle tandem of Dario Beslic and Dennis Balzenic. The only Shocker doubles loss came in the No. 1 match, when Tiago Espirito Santo and Adrian Chermaci dropped an 8-4 decision to ORU's Alex Kotsuik and Alex Dargel.
WSU won the doubles competition with relative ease. Espirito Santo downed Kotsuik 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 match, while Ballesta earned the No. 2 match with a 6-4, 7-6 (13) win over ORU's Dargel. The match was secured when the Shockers swept the No. 3 and No. 4 matches, respectively. In the No. 3 match, Dos Santos downed ORU's Troyke 6-2, 6-1, while Obrist won the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-2.
To expediate the tournament, the No. 5 and No. 6 matches were not played.
The Shockers are now 2-0 in the Shocker Classic. They will take on North Florida in their final match of the event Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
