Shocks Top Sycamores, 65-60

Box Score

Wichita, Kan.-Trailing by seven with nine minutes to play, Wichita State (10-14, 3-10) used an 11-3 run to take the lead and held off visiting Indiana State (11-12, 5-8) for a 65-60 win Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

In his first start since suffering a concussion Dec. 29 against Drake, senior Matt Braeuer went 6-of-9 from the floor and finished with 15 points to lead WSU. Fellow seniors P.J. Couisnard and Phillip Thomasson each finished in double-figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Gabe Moore paced the Sycamores with 16 points, while Jay Tunnell had 13 and Marico Stinson chipped in 12 points.

The opening minutes saw a back and forth battle until the Shockers created some separation with a 9-0 run that included a three-pointer by senior Lance Harris. Down 15-9 with 10:21 to play, ISU stormed back going on an 11-4 run of its own for a 20-19 lead with 4:22 to go in the half.

The Sycamores stretched the lead to five, 28-23, on a Stinson three-pointer with just over a minute before halftime. ISU went into the break with a 28-25 lead.

The Shockers came out of the break and took a 36-34 lead on a layup by Braeuer with 15:58 remaining. ISU started to heat up behind the arc. Tunnell, Cole Holstrom and Aaron Carter all connected from downtown in a four-minute stretch midway through the second half.

Harry Marshall banked in a three-pointer as the shot-clock expired to give the Sycamores a seven point advantage, 49-42, with 9:24 to play.

WSU turned up the defensive pressure and quickly turned turnovers into layups at the other end. After a layup by Couisnard, Harris reached in and ripped the ball away and fed Braeuer for an easy basket.

Two free-throws from Aaron Ellis gave the Shockers the lead for good with 5:58 to play. Couisnard brought the crowd to its feet by driving the baseline and dunking over Todd McCoy. McCoy was called for a foul on the play and Couisnard hit the free-throw for a 61-56 lead with 2:14 to play.

The Shockers held on for the 65-60 win despite missing 4-of-6 free-throws in the final minute.

“Nothing has been easy for this team all year,” said head coach Gregg Marshall. “We are proud of the guys tonight. They battled through more adversity. This time they were able to overcome. Adversity comes in many ways for basketball teams in a season and in a game and we certainly had our share tonight. It was great to have Matt (Braeuer) back and it was just a nice win for us.”

WSU shot 55 percent in the second half and 51 percent for the game while holding the Sycamores to just 34 percent in the second half and 40 percent for the game.

“I am happy to be back, personally, just so I can play the game I love and to be back with all these guys I've worked hard with for more than one year,” said Braeuer. “This summer and before practice even started, we worked so hard. I think with that effort, which I guarantee you we will put out from here, we have a good chance to win a lot of games.”

The Shockers will be back in action on Wed., Feb. 13 as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and will be broadcast on Kansas Now 22 with Bruce Haertl and Craig Steven with the call.
