TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Wichita State (9-18, 3-12) trailed by just six at the break by a big second-half run by Indiana State (12-12, 6-8), helped the Sycamores push past the Shockers, 69-50, Saturday afternoon inside the Hulman Center.
Jacie Hoyt led the Shockers with 11 points on the afternoon. Angela Phillips led all players with 13 points. WSU shot just 36-percent on the afternoon, while ISU scored 19 points off 20 WSU turnovers.
Both teams struggled early offensively, combining for 12 turnovers in the first seven minutes of play and only 10 points after ISU opened the game on a 7-3 run. Leah Phillips'3-pointer with 12:25 left gave the Sycamores a 10-3 lead and ISU then went up 12-3 following a Kara Schilli layin with 11:54 left in the opening frame.
Whitney Rice's jumper with 10:45 left ended a near nine-minute drought from the floor, opening the game just 2-for-11 from the field.
Kiki Stephens' bucket with 4:40 left cut the deficit to just four, 22-18, but the Shockers could not get any closer, going to the break down 30-24.
ISU outscored the Shockers 11-3 at the free-throw line in the first frame, while WSU held a 12-6 advantage in the paint. Both teams shot 44-percent from the floor in the first half.
Wichita State commited four turnovers in the first two minutes of the second frame, allowing ISU to open the half on a 13-0 run that gave the Sycamores a 43-24 lead following Angela Phillps' 3-pointer with 16:46, the largest deficit faced by the Shockers on the afternoon to that point.
The Shockers could never respond, failing to cut the deficit to less than 10 for the rest of the afternoon. WSU is next in action at 2:05 p.m., Sun., March 2, at Missouri State.
