ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Senior Britnee Barnett hit her second home run of the season in the first inning to set the tone as Wichita State (7-5) defeated No.22 Washington (5-5-1) 18-0 to open Day two at the Lobo Invitational.
The win marks the first over a ranked opponent since May 5, 2007, when the Shockers defeated No. 21 Southern Illinois, 2-1.
After Katie McGeeney walked to start the game, Barnett's homer to left-center gave the Shockers a quick 2-0 lead. WSU tacked on another run in the third as Cynthia Verhulst singled and later scored on an illegal pitch.
The fourth inning saw 16 Shocker hitters go to the plate, 10 of which ended up scoring. McGeeney singled to leadoff the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a Barnett single, Verhulst reached on an error to load the bases.
Freshman Heather Gerritse singled to drive in a pair of runs and started a string of seven straight hits for WSU, including an RBI triple by McGeeney. The Shockers weren't done yet, as Verhulst put an exclamation point on the victory with a towering two-run homer to centerfield.
Senior pitcher Ashly Bright continued her dominance in the circle pitching five scoreless innings while giving up just two hits and striking out six.
Barnett led WSU going 3-for-5, needing just a double to hit for the cycle, and collected four RBI. Verhulst also finished with four RBI. Eight starters had at least one RBI in a game that saw the Shockers threaten to break the school record for runs in a game.
WSU will play Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m., tonight.
