Shocks Fall Short In Title Game, 2-0

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Wichita State (5-4) wrapped up play in the Stanford Invitational with a 2-0 loss in the championship game to No. 13/14 Stanford (10-0) Sunday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium.

The Cardinal got on the board first with two runs in the fourth before the Shockers posed a serious scoring threat in the fifth after Jamie Stanclift was hit by a pitch and Jamie Hull walked, giving WSU runners on first and second with no outs. Christina Rios then bunted the runners over to give the Shockers two runners in scoring position with one out but a pair of ground outs by the Shockers ended the threat, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.

It was all the offense Stanford starter Missy Pena (8-0) needed, as she limited the Shockers to just ? hits on the afternoon. Ashly Bright (3-2) pitched well also, giving up just two runs on three hits to Stanford's high-power offense that scored 11 runs on Wichita State on Friday. The Shockers outhit the Cardinal 3-2, but failed to push the runs across giving Stanford the win.

The Shockers are in action again next weekend at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
