WICHITA -- Wichita State (8-15, 2-9) got a career-high 14 rebounds from
Kiki Stephens, but had no answer for Jacqui Kalin's 27 points as UNI (9-13, 5-6) held off a late Shocker rally to win its third straight, 64-54, Thursday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
With the win, UNI tied a WSU record with its 19-straight win over the Shockers. Stephens and Kinder led the Shockers with nine points each. Kalin's 27 points led all players.
The Shockers trailed for a good portion of the first half thanks to a well-executed offense by the Panthers that shot nearly 50-percent from the floor in the early going and forced six early WSU turnovers.
UNI was never able to build a large lead though as the Shockers kept the deficit to one possession until a Jacqui Kalin 3-pointer with 8:09 left gave the Panthers a 18-14 lead. Whitney Rice responded quickly, connecting on a 3-pointer of her own to cut the deficit to 18-17 by the 7:42 mark of the first.
An
Alex Bunton layin with 7:14 left in the half gave WSU its first lead since the opening bucket of the game, and the Shockers capitalized as freshman
Jennifer DeGarmo drained a 3-pointer to give WSU its largest lead to that point, 22-18.
The Panthers had an answer yet again, ripping off 14-straight points over the next four minutes to take a 32-22 lead by the 2:00 mark of the first, the largest lead by either team to that point.
A Stephens putback with 1:45 left ended a near five-minute scoring drought for the Shockers, but the Panthers responded with a Kalin basket to regain a 34-24 lead with 1:11 left before the break.
Kyrie Kinder's 3-pointer with :51 seconds left cut the deficit to seven, but Kalin answered with a 3-pointer of her own to give the Panthers a 37-27 edge heading into the half.
Both teams ended the half with a hot run, as the Shockers shot 40-percent from the floor in the first frame while UNI was an even 50-percent.
A second-half team all season the Shockers came out of the locker determined once again, scoring the first five points of the half to cut the deficit to as few as five, but the Panthers again had an answer ripping off six-straight to take its largest lead of the game to that point, 43-32.
Daria Frazier's first 3-pointer of the season and a pair of DeGarmo free throws cut the deficit to six, 43-37, with 12:16 left in the contest before the freshman connected on her second 3-pointer of the night to trim UNI's advantage to five, 46-41, with 10:35 left to play.
Every time the Shockers managed to make a dent into the UNI lead the Panthers answered, and did so yet again with a Kalin three-point play that gave Northern Iowa a 49-41 lead with nine minutes left in the contest.
The Panthers used a five-plus minute Shocker scoring drought midway through the second to rip off a 7-0 run before four-straight points from Kinder cut the UNI lead to 53-45 with 4:18 left. The teams traded points again until the Shockers used a mini 5-0 run to pull within five by the 2:00 mark, but an offensive foul gave the Panthers the ball with 1:36 left and Nicole Clausen capitalized, sinking a free throw with 1:15 left to give UNI a 58-52 edge.
Samantha Smith responded for the Shockers on the offensive end with a layin and a foul, but missed on the free throw that would have cut the Panther lead to three, allowing UNI's Erin Brocka to sink a pair of free throws with :53 seconds left that sank the Shockers' hopes as well.
WSU has multiple looks with under a minute left but ultimately turned it over to the Panthers with :20 seconds left securing the win for the Panthers.
WSU is next in action at 1 p.m., Saturday against Bradley on "Think Pink" day, with fans encouraged to wear pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer research.
