WICHITA ? Three players posted double digit scoring efforts for WSU as the Shockers cruised to a 65-46 win over Western Illinois Sunday afternoon in front of 1,585 fans inside Charles Koch Arena.
Shocker senior Daria Frazier came up just three points shy of a career scoring night, leading all scorers with 18 points, while junior Marsiah Henderson notched her first double-double of the season with a 13-point, 11-assist effort. Marcy Sudbeck added 12 points of her own, and joined Frazier to lead WSU with eight rebounds.
Nicole Myers led the Westerwinds with eight points, while Ashley Lord led all rebounders, grabbing 15 boards in the game.
A Jacie Hoyt three pointer just 48 seconds into the game opened the scoring for Wichita State. Marcy Sudbeck added a lay-in a couple possessions later to give WSU an early 5-0 advantage, but an 8-2 WIU run saw the Westerwinds take an 8-7 advantage by the 13:27 mark of the opening half.
The Shockers answered with a 6-2 run of their own, claiming a 13-10 advantage by the 12:04 mark. The teams traded buckets, and the lead, for the next four minutes before the Shockers put together a 9-0 run that was anchored by four points from Daria Frazier. The run allowed WSU to take its largest lead of the first half, 28-20, with just two minutes left in the half. Frazier scored the final six points of the half for WSU, giving the hosts a 32-26 halftime advantage.
Frazier went right back to work in the second half, scoring four of WSU's first seven points as part of an 11-4 WSU run to start the second frame. Back-to-back lay-ups by Marcy Sudbeck gave the Shockers a 43-30 lead, by the 15:30 mark. Sudbeck pushed the WSU lead to 18 with another jumper at the 11:46 mark when the Shockers led 53-35. WSU achieved its largest lead of the game when Marisah Henderson drained a three pointer from the right side, giving the Shockers a 63-39 advantage with 3:39 remaining. The Westerwinds closed the game on a 7-2 run, but it wasn't enough to spoil WSU”s last home game before the holiday break, as WSU secured a 65-46 win.
Wichita State shot a season-high 47.4 percent (27-57) from the field, while connecting on a season-high 53.8 percent (7-13) of its three point shots. WSU shot just six free throws in the game, and converted four of them.
Western Illinois went 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field and struggled to 18.8 percent (3-16) shooting from beyond the arc.
Wichita State will enjoy a brief holiday break before they take the floor again Dec. 29 when they entertain Mercer in a 7:05 p.m. contest at Charles Koch Arena.
