Spartans Edge Shockers, 65-57

Box Score

Orlando, Fla.--Despite a random forty-minute rain delay, Wichita State gave the No. 6 Michigan State Spartans a close-game scare before falling to the Spartans, 65-57 in the fifth-place game at The Old Spice Classic.

Five quick points for Durrell Summers opened an early 7-0 lead for the Spartans as the Shockers missed their first five shots. Following up his player-of-the-game performance on Friday morning, Clevin Hannah knocked a steal loose to set up a Toure' Murry layup to narrow the early deficit, 7-5.

Each team scored another bucket, before play stalled when coaches Tom Izzo and Gregg Marshall were asked their opinions about a steady leak coming from the Milk House vents. Moments later, the game was delayed and both teams returned to their locker rooms as a rain delay ensued while the facilities crew worked quickly to take care of the leak.

Forty-three minutes later, J.T Durley and Aaron Ellis hit jumpers to highlighting an 11-2 Wichita State run to briefly take the lead, 11-9, as play continued following the delay. More than midway through the first half, each team was shooting around 40 percent from the floor, preventing much of a lead on either side.

Ten turnovers for Michigan State with more than six minutes to play in the opening half gave the Shockers a little room. Durley's first three-pointers of the season and another from Graham Hatch stretched the Shockers' lead, 26-18 with less than two minutes before the break. A 4-0 Michigan State run ended the half, 26-22.

Summers nailed a three to answer Garrett Stutz's drive to the basket three-point play in the early minutes of the second half, bringing the Spartans within one, 29-28. A Delvon Roe free throw gave the Spartans' their first lead since midway through the first half, 32-31. Although Michigan State would strengthen its lead, the Spartans were unable to pull away from the Shockers by more than a handful of points at a time.

That is until five consecutive points from Spartan guard Chris Allen opened the gap to 44-37, matching Michigan State's largest lead of the day. Wichita State's defense kept it tight, but a six-minute field-goal drought allowed the Spartans lead to reach double digits, 50-39.

Unfazed, Hannah immediately answered with back-to-back threes to bring the Shockers within five, 50-45. With less than five minutes to play, Hannah made the Shockers a perfect 9-for-9 from the line to maintain a close game, 56-49. On the flip side, a dismal 18-of-31 free-throw performance by the Spartans made the Shockers' late-game foul trouble less destructive.

Refusing to let up on the top 10 team, Murry hit a three with less than a minute and a half left in the game, keeping pressure on the Spartans, 62-56. The effort wouldn't be enough as the underdogs fell, 65-57.

Once again, Hannah led the Shockers with 19 points, nine of which came from behind the arc. For the Spartans, Gray led the offensive attack with 12 points.

The Shockers are next in action on Dec. 3 at Texas Tech.
