MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- WSU's Marcy Sudbeck posted her fifth-consecutive double-double but it wasn't enough as the Shockers opened the 24th Annual Piggly Wiggly Classic with a 61-54 loss to host Memphis, Friday evening inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Sudbeck scored a game-high 18 points, while pulling down a team-best 12 boards. Jacie Hoyt added 13 points for the Shockers while Marisah Henderson chipped in 10. Alex Winchell led Memphis with 16 points thanks to a 4-for-6 effort from three-point range.

The Tigers opened the game on a 7-0 run, fueled by five early WSU turnovers, forcing the Shockers to burn their first timeout just three minutes into the game. WSU got on the board with a Jacie Hoyt three-pointer with 16:37 left in the first, and scored each of its first nine points on three-point baskets, fighting back to within 15-11 after a Sudbeck eight-footer with 10:41 left in the half.

The Shockers trailed by as many as nine before making a run at the end of the half, getting back-to-back baskets from Marisah Henderson to cut the deficit to 27-26 with less than a minute before the break, the same score the teams would go to the half with.

WSU shot 42-percent from the floor in the first half, while limiting Memphis to just 9-of-32 shooting in the opening frame. The Shockers outrebounded Memphis 19-17 in the first, but the Tigers scored 12 points off 12 Shocker turnovers. The Shockers held Memphis scoreless from the floor over the final 5:56 of the first half, as the Tigers scored just two free throws in the final five-plus minutes of the frame.

Wichita State came out fighting to start the second, pressuring Memphis into turnovers and capitalizing, taking its first lead of the contest after Sudbeck sank a pair of free throws to give the Shocks a 28-27 lead with 19:11 left in regulation. A Sudbeck three-point play gave WSU a 33-31 lead.

Sudbeck's 12th-point of the night gave the Shockers a 35-31 lead with with 15:58 remaining, but Memphis quickly regained the lead, using a 10-2 run to take a 41-35 advantage after a Shae Seagraves basket with 13:08 left to play. Sudbeck's basket with 11:38 left cut the deficit to 41-37, as the senior scored eight of the Shockers' first 10 points of the second half.

Memphis then broke the game open with a 9-0 run fueled by five free throws that extended the Tigers' lead to 50-37 with 9:25 left to play. UM extended the lead to as many as 15 down the stretch as the Shockers could never cut the deficit to single digits again until the final minute.

The Shockers shot just 27-percent from the floor in the second half, but were outrebounded by 16 in the contest. Memphis scored 14 points at the free-throw line and 25 points off 23 Shocker turnovers.
