Box Score WICHITA -- A late rally fell three points short as the UMKC Kangaroos spoiled WuShock's 60th birthday with a 66-63 win over WSU Wednesday night in front of 10,282 fans inside Charles Koch Arena.

The teams spent the better part of the first six minutes getting a feel for the other team. In a game that took on the rhythm of a heavyweight boxing match, Wichita State found itself with a 9-8 advantage at the first media timeout, thanks in large part to three put back buckets by Ramon Clemente.

J.T. Durley took matters into his own hands coming out of the timeout. The Shocker sophomore scored five points over the next four minutes as part of a 9-5 WSU run that gave the hosts an 18-13 edge with just under 11 minutes to play in the first half.

The heavyweight match got more physical as the first half progressed. Securing each rebound was a battle, especialy if Clemente was involved. Clemente grabbed his sixth rebound of the game just before the five minute mark of the first half, helping the Shocks to a 12-6 rebounding advantage to that point.

Meanwhile, the Roos were addressing business of their own, using an 8-0 spurt to draw within one, 23-22, at the 3:28 mark of the first half. UMKC tied the game at 23-23 with a James Humphrey free throw seconds later. It took the better part of two minutes, but Reggie Hamilton finally gave the Roos the lead, 25-23, at the 1:15 mark when he sank a pair of free throws.

Garrett Stutz ended a nine-minute Shocker scoring drought with a lay-up and a free throw with 31 seconds left in the half to give the Shocks a 26-25 lead. A running jumper by UMKC's Latreze Mushatt with four seconds left gave the Roos a 27-26 edge they would carry into the halftime break.

The score remained close into the opening minutes of the second half. Clevin Hannah sank a three pointer for his first points of the game to tie the game a 29-29 less than a minute into the second half. The teams would trade baskets for the next six minutes, when the Roos held a 47-44 lead at the 11:19 mark

UMKC claimed its largest lead of the evening on a Dane Brumagin trey that gave the Roos a 50-44 edge. Graham Hatch erased two of those points on the next possession with a rebound and put back off of an errant J.T. Durley three point attempt. Reggie Chamberlain erased two more with a jumper that brought the Shocks to with two at 50-48 before Brumagin once again extended the Roo lead to six on consecutive baskets. With just under eight minutes left in the game, UMKC led 54-48.

Trailing 59-52, Shocker head coach Gregg Marshall turned up the pressure on the Roos. Toure' Murry took advantage of a Clemente steal, and sank a three-point basket from the far corner to bring his squad to within four, 59-55, with just under four minutes to play, but the Roos answered with a 3-0 run to extend the lead back to seven, 62-55 with three minutes remaining.

The Shockers made it interesting down the stretch. An A.J. Hawkins lay-up combined with a steal, lay-up, and free throw by Toure Murry quickly erased most of the deficit, and brought WSU to within two at 64-62 with less than 90 seconds remaining.

A three point attempt by UMKC's Brumagin that may have put the game out of reach sailed over the rim and into the hands of Ramon Clemente who secured the final possession for WSU. Marshall quickly called a timeout as Clemente brought the ball past half court to set up the game's final sequence of plays.

Before that sequence of plays had a chance to get started, Stutz was fouled by Humphrey, sending the freshman center to the line for two shots. Stutz hit the front end to draw within one,64-63 but the second shot rimmed out and was rebounded by Brumagin who was quickly fouled. The Roo senior was fouled and converted both of his free throws with seven seconds remaining to seal the 66-63 UMKC win.

Free throws plagued the Shockers all night. Wichita State converted just 11 of their 24 (45.8 percent) attempts from the charity stripe, while the Roos were 12 of 15 (80 percent) from the line.

Clemente led the Shockers in the loss, and finished with his second-consecutive double-double. The Shocker senior scored 11 points, and snagged 17 rebounds to tie his career high. Toure' Murry and A.J. Hawkins also added 11 points each for WSU.

The Roos were led by a 14-point effort from Spencer Johnson. Mushatt added 13 points and Brumagin finished with 12. Dustin Dibble was UMKC's leading rebounder with six boards in the contest

For the 50th consecutive game, more than 10,000 fans filed into Charles Koch Arena, as 10,282 fans were on hand to celebrate WuShock's 60th birthday.

With the loss, the Shockers fall to 1-1, while UMKC improves to 1-2 with the win. WSU is back in action Monday night when they play host to Centenary. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 at Charles Koch Arena.
