WICHITA -- Illinois State (17-1, 7-0) used a strong transition offense to score quickly and often as the league-leading Redbirds flew past Wichita State (7-13, 1-7), 71-53, Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Kiki Stephens led the Shockers with her second double-double of the season, scoring a team-best 14 points while pulling down a season-best 11 rebounds. Four Redbird players finished in double figures on the afternoon with Kristi Cirone's game-high 15 leading Nicolle Lewis (11 points), Maggie Krick (11 points) and Ashley Bracey's 10.
Illinois State outscored the Shockers 36-16 in the paint while posting 25 points off 18 Shocker turnovers.
The Shockers used the momentum from Friday night's win to play well early, trading points with the Redbirds in the opening minutes before the nation's eighth-ranked offense got its transition game going with a 10-0 run that gave ISU a 17-6 lead by the 14-minute mark of the first half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jennifer DeGarmo and
Frannie Vathauer and a pair of free throws from Whitney Rice cut the deficit to four by the 11-minute mark, which would be as close as the Shockers would be the rest of the afternoon as ISU responded with another 10-0 run of its own to build a 27-13 lead by the 6:30 mark of the first and never looked back en route to its 13th-straight win.
After opening the game shooting 3-for-7 from the floor the Shockers went ice cold, going 2-for-13 over the next 12 minutes allowing the Redbirds to run on missed shots and build the lead to as many as 18 down the stretch before the Shockers closed the half on a 9-3 run to trail 35-23 at the break.
Illinois State shot 47-percent from the field in the first half, but was just 1-for-7 from 3-point range. The Redbirds forced 11 first-half Shocker turnovers, but WSU still managed to execute its offense well, recording six assists on nine made baskets while shooting 33-percent.
The Shockers scored five of the first six points of the second half before ISU ripped off a 10-2 run to stretch its lead to 48-30 following a Tiffany Hudson transition layin with 13:05 left to play.
WSU could never cut the deficit to single digits, but did hold the league's best offense below its season average of nearly 80 points per contest.
The Shockers have nearly a week off before hosting conference-rival Missouri State at 2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 2 in Charles Koch Arena to wrap up a three-game conference homestand.
