Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit with five minutes to play to tie the game at 63 but could not complete the comeback, falling to Creighton (12-3, 3-2) 68-65, Saturday night in Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers were led by senior
P.J. Couisnard's game-high 21 points, while
Gal Mekel added 10 points.
Freshman P'Allen Stinnett paced the Bluejays with 16 points, while Nick Bahe went 3-for-5 from three-point range and finished with 15 points.
Both teams traded baskets to start the game as the first nine minutes saw five lead changes and five ties. CU started to distance itself with a 10-2 run, capped by a Bahe three-pointer, to take a 28-21 lead with 7:37 remaining in the half.
Couisnard tied the game at 32 with an old fashioned three-point play with 51 seconds left. Bahe closed out the half with a jumper from the wing with just six seconds on the clock to give the Bluejays a 34-32 advantage at the half.
The second half started much like the first, as the teams battled back and forth producing five more ties in the first nine minutes of the half. CU started to pull away with a 15-3 run to take a 63-51 lead with 5:30 on the clock.
Couisnard started the comeback with a three-pointer and a pair of free-throws. With 1:46 remaining and the shot-clock winding down,
Mantas Griskenas buried a three-pointer at the top of the key to tie the game at 63.
After Stinnett hit two free-throws with just over a minute to play, Josh Dotzler stole a Mekel pass and drove in for a layup to give the Bluejays a 67-63 lead. Down 68-65 after a Stinnett free-throw, the Shockers had one last chance to tie the game, but a three-pointer by Mekel fell short at the buzzer.
The Shockers shot 43 percent for the game and were outrebounded, 27-26, for just the third time this year.
WSU will be back in action on Wed., Jan. 16 as the team travels to Normal, Ill., to take on Illinois State. The game will be broadcast on Kansas Now 22 with tip-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
