WICHITA - Wichita State (32-26, 16-8) managed nine hits off Evansville starter Jacki Bradley, but the Shockers needed an extra inning for a dramatic 2-1 win over the Purple Aces (30-18, 10-12) to take the series 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Both senior Brooke Usher and junior Britnee Barnett had 2-for-4 performances for the Shockers, who left just five runners on base after stranding double that number on Saturday. With the win, WSU clinched no worse than fourth in the Valley standings, and will be no worse than the No. 4-seed for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, which begins May 10 in Normal, Ill.
The Shockers scored first with a run in the bottom of the fourth after Britnee Barnett led the inning off with a single to right and came around to score on a RBI single through the left side by Erin Peters, giving WSU a 1-0 lead.
Jacki Bradley tied the game with her third home run of the season in the fifth, a shot she pulled deep over the right field wall. Bradley's home run tied the game 1-1 after five.
Ashly Bright relieved starter Margo Pruis in the sixth, as Pruis finished her Senior Day working 5.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out nine.
Evansville had a chance to lead it in the eighth when Lissa Fehlman led the inning off with a high chopping single over the head of Stephanie De La Riva. Leadoff hitter Amanda Ockomon advanced Fehlman to second on the sacrifice before Ashley Werner got her to third on a ground out. UE's cleanup hitter Brittany Herald couldn't push the run across however, as Barnett hauled in her pop up to end the inning and the threat.
The Shockers won it in the eighth when Katie McGeeney led the inning off with a single to left-center and went to second when senior Brooke Usher singled through the left side, giving WSU two runners on with nobody out. Barnett was then robbed of a walk-off home run by Werner, who reached her glove over the fence to pull in Barnett's game-winner, but both McGeeney and Usher advanced another base. Ashly Bright then slapped the game winner through the right side, bringing home McGeeney to give the Shockers the thrilling 2-1 win in the eighth.
Jacki Bradley (9-6) took the loss for the Purple Aces, working 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits while walking none and striking out three. Bright (8-10) picked up the win for the Shockers, working the final 2.2 innings giving up just one hit, while walking one and striking out two.
WSU closes the home portion of its 2007 schedule when the Shockers host Kansas at 5 p.m., Wednesday.
