Wichita State (8-13, 3-8) got a career-high 19 points from Marcy Sudbeck, but Indiana State's Kelsey Luna scored 20 to lead all players as the Sycamores (14-10, 7-6) raced past the Shockers, 73-56, Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Sudbeck's career-best topped her 17-point performance against the Sycamores last month in Terre Haute. Kiki Stephens chipped in 11 as the only other Shocker player to reach double-figures.
Kara Schilli came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points while Maria Olsthoorn chipped in 12 points.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start, as the Shockers went 1-for-5 and the Sycamores just 2-for-9 in the opening minutes. Neither team could manage a substantial lead in until a Wells layin gave WSU a 18-15 lead with 8:20 left in the half.
Indiana State then went on a 10-0 run over the next 6:40 to take a 25-18 lead by the two-minute mark of the first. The Shockers ended a near seven-minute scoring drought with a pair of Sudbeck free throws with 1:43 left, sparking a 6-0 run for WSU that cut the Sycamore lead down to 25-24, after Alex Bunton's putback with just under :16 seconds left.
The Sycamores scored the final points of the half after Leah Phillips' runner drew a foul, and after she missed the free throw, Kara Schilli brought down the rebound and put up a layin just before time expired to give the Sycamores a 29-24 halftime lead.
The Shockers held the nation's fourth-best three-point shooting team scoreless from long-range in the first half, as the Sycamores went 0-for-8 from the arc.
ISU turned up the defensive heat as the second period started, capitalizing on two Shocker turnovers to go on a mini 6-3 run to take a 35-27 lead, its largest of the game to that point, with 18:20 left in the second.
Combined with the run at the end of the first half it made it a 10-3 stretch for the Sycamores, and ISU continued to pick up the pace to pull away by as many as 17 in the middle part of the second frame.
A Bunton basket with 16:38 left cut the Sycamore lead to just six at 37-31, but ISU responded with a 14-4 run capped by a Maria Olsthoorn basket with 13:07 left to lead 51-35. The Shockers cut the advantage to as few as nine on two separate occasions down the stretch, but the nation's fifth-ranked offense shot an impressive 61 percent in the second half to keep the Shockers from making a run.
Wichita State is next in action at 7 p.m., Monday against Illinois State in Charles Koch Arena.
