EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Wichita State (9-18, 4-13) rallied from as many as 11 points down in the second half to take a one point lead with 3:42 remaining, but Evansville (17-11, 10-7) scored its final 12 points of the game off free throws and put away the Shockers, 77-68, Wednesday evening inside Roberts Stadium.
In a game which featured five ties and 23 lead changes, Evansville used its free throw shooting to its advantage to knock off the Shockers and move into fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The Purple Aces went 10-of-12 from the foul line in the game's final 3:24 to distance themselves from Wichita State with a 12-2 run.
Junior guard Courtney Felke began Evansville's final stretch run with two free throws with 3:24 to play to give UE a 67-66 lead. Fellow junior Rebekah Parker then added a pair of free throws and a lay-up with 59 seconds to play to push the lead out to five points, 71-66.
Parker would hit three more free throws down the stretch, and sophomores Robyn Jennings and Ashley Austin would add three free throws as well, as UE would extend to lead out to 11 points, 77-66, with just 14 seconds remaining. Wichita State's Whitney Rice would hit an off-balance jumper from the left wing with five seconds left to provide the final score. The shot by Rice was Wichita State's lone basket in the game's final 3:42, as UE held the Shockers to 1-of-9 shooting from the floor down the stretch.
Parker finished the game going 9-for-10 from the free throw line en route to a game-high 19-point performance. She led a strong UE charge at the foul line on the night, as the Purple Aces shot 85.2 percent from the line on 23-of-27 shooting. Wichita State, meanwhile, made just nine free throws in 14 attempts (64.3 percent).
Kiki Stephens led Wichita State with 18 points, while reserve forward Marcy Sudbeck added 15 points in 19 minutes of play.
Parker was joined in double-figures by Felke, who added 15 points, and post players Laura Gaybrick (11 points) and Shannon Novosel (10 points, six rebounds).
The Shockers are back in action Sat., March 3 as the Shockers travel to Carbondale, Ill., to take on the Southern Illinois Saluki's in the final regular season game for both schools.
