PEORIA, Ill. - Wichita State's Antionette Wells scored a career-high 30 points and posted her league-best 11th double-double of the season, but Bradley's 10-for-19 effort from three-point range led a strong offensive attack as the Braves (11-15, 7-8) raced past the Shockers (9-15, 4-10), 88-77, Saturday night inside Robertson Field House.
Wells' 30-point effort was the first by a Wichita State player since Kim Evans scored 33 points against Drake in 1995. The senior also pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, posting the same number of total rebounds that the Bradley team had on the defensive side alone. Taylor Steven chipped in nine points for the Shockers as did Daria Frazier, while Lexee McDonnell had a team-high five assists.
All five Bradley starters recorded double-digit scoring nights, including Erika Nelson's team-best 20, after scoring 31 in Wichita against the Shockers last month.
WSU outrebounded the Braves 34-27, but Bradley scored 22 points off 18 Shocker turnovers.
Wichita State started the first half in a similar fashion to Thursday night's game, trading buckets with Bradley to the tune of four lead changes in the first four-plus minutes.
WSU's post combination paced the scoring in the early going as Wells and Stephens each scored eight points in the first eight-plus minutes to lead the Shockers on an early 10-4 run capped by a Wells putback with 15:01 left that gave WSU a 12-9 lead.
Bradley answered with an 16-4 run capped by a Rachel Merriman runner to regain the lead, 25-16, with just over nine minutes left in the first. BU extended the lead to 10 points, thanks in part to a four minute scoring drought by the Shockers, after a Brown three-pointer gave the Braves a 30-20 lead with 7:32 left in the half.
A Peters three-pointer from the right corner with 7:06 left gave BU its largest lead of the game, 33-20, capping a 12-4 run. WSU scored the next eight points to close to as few as five after a Wells layin cut the Bradley lead to 33-28 with 5:17 left in the first. A pair of Krumwiede free throws with 3:17 left extended the Braves' lead to 36-28, but a Frannie Vathauer three-pointer cut the lead to 36-31 with just under two minutes left in the half.
Bradley scored the final five points of the first frame, and took a 41-31 lead to the break after a Peters three-pointer with :44 seconds left capped the scoring in the half.
The Shockers had 10 first half turnovers, and the Braves capitalized to score 14 of their 41 first half points off them. WSU won the battle of the boards in the first half, 17-11, but did not force a Bradley turnover in the first half with no steals.
The Braves ended the first half and opened the second frame on fire, hitting seven-straight three-pointers from the end of the first to the 14:57 mark of the second. Wichita State answered the long range attack with three-pointers from Taylor Steven and Lexee McDonnell to keep ground on the Braves, closing to within 57-49 with 14:45 left in the game.
A 9-0 run by the Braves and another four-plus minute slump with just one basket from the Shockers pushed Bradley out to its biggest lead of the game following a Brown jumper from the left side, giving BU a 73-58 advantage with just under eight minutes left in the game.
WSU then scored seven of the next nine points to close within 10 again, 75-65, following a Steven three-pointer with 5:50 to play. After an Ashley Chelleen lay up, Wells highlighted a 13-4 run with five free throws and a jumper to cut the lead to five, 82-77, with 2:30 remaining. The Braves hit 4-of-6 from the line down the stretch to seal the win, 88-77.
The Shockers are next in action at 7 p.m., Fri., Feb. 23, in Charles Koch Arena against Drake. Sun., Feb. 25 will be Senior Day in Charles Koch Arena, as seniors Antionette Wells and Lexee McDonnell will be honored prior to the 2 p.m., game against Creighton. Sunday is also Fan Appreciation Day, where numerous door prizes will be given to fans in attendance.
