Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa- Drake used a four-point play and free throws to steal Wichita State's late lead, defeating the Shockers, 62-58, Wednesday night in Des Moines, Iowa. Wichita State fell to 8-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play, 17-10 on the season, and now stand in fifth place with Bradley's 82-76 overtime win against Evansville.
Karon Bradley had a game-high 17 points while Kyle Wilson followed with 10 and led the team in rebounding with eight. The Shockers played without the services of guard Sean Ogirri, who suffered a sprained ankle during a Tuesday practice in Wichita. Ogirri scored a career-high 29 points in Wichita State's 82-77 home victory against Drake Jan. 24.
Ajay Calvin led Drake with 16 points, including nine in the first half. Nick Grant finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Wichita State, down 27-33 at the half, came out firing with Bradley and Gal Mekel knocking down consecutive shots to cut the lead to one. Drake responded with six unanswered points to push the lead back out to seven, 39-32. The Shockers went on an 11-2 run, capped by a Matt Braeuer three-pointed that gave WSU their first lead of the game, 43-41, at the 11:10 mark of the second half.
The advantage didn't last long as the Bulldogs pounded the ball down low for two baskets that retook the lead for Drake. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes of the game, resulting in four ties in the time span. Back-to-back baskets by Bradley and P.J. Couisnard gave the Shockers their largest lead of four, 53-49, but any momentum was killed when Drake hit their first three-pointer of the game.
Wilson nailed a jumper to put Wichita State up by two, before Drake's Klayton Korver hit a three and was fouled on the play. Korver made the bonus shot and Grant sank two free baskets to secure the win, 62-58.
After an early 7-2 Drake lead, Wendell Preadom laid in a basket and followed with a free throw to knot the game at 11. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to give them their largest lead, 19-11, with 12:22 left in the first half. Consecutive threes by Wilson and Mekel ended the Shocker drought and brought WSU within two. Tied at 27, Drake scored the last six points of the half, ending with a tip-in from Calvin with 0.1 second left that sent them into the break with the 33-27 advantage.
Wichita State was perfect from the free throw line, but only went there twice, Preadom sinking all three attempts. Drake was 14-17 from the line. WSU shot 45.1 percent on the night, compared to a Drake 41.8 percent, but the Bulldogs had the upper hand on defense, out-rebounding the Shockers, 37-26.
Wichita State plays host to Appalachian State Saturday at noon in ESPN BracketBuster action at home in Charles Koch Arena.
