Shocks Stun Redbirds, 75-69

2/12/2007 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. - With the help of Antoinette Wells career-high 27 points, the Wichita State women's basketball team moved to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in MVC play after blindsiding the Illinois State Redbirds (17-7, 10-3), 75-69, Monday evening inside Charles Koch Arena.

Wells posted her league-leading ninth double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 17 boards, including five of Wichita State's 10 offensive rebounds on the night. She was joined in double-figures by Daria Frazier's season-high 14 points, and Lexee McDonnell's 13 points, on 5-of-9 shooting.

The Redbirds were led by a trio of double-digit scorers, including Kristi Cirone's team-high 21 points. Nicolle Lewis schipped in 12 along with a ISU-best seven boards, while Tiffany Hudson scored 10 on 5-of-10 shooting. WSU won a narrow advantage on the glass 36-35, out-boarding the league's top rebounding team. The Shocker defense limited ISU to 37.9 percent shooting, and the 21st-best offense in the nation to 69 points.

The Shockers could not have asked for a better start, opening the game on a 10-2 run over the first five-plus minutes, even with turnovers on three of their first five possessions. The Shockers built the lead to 14-4 after a pair of Wells free throws with 14 minutes left in the opening half but ISU capitalized on a three-plus minute scoring drought by WSU to go on an 8-0 run of its own, closing the WSU lead to 14-12 by the 12:14 mark of the first.

A Wells layin with 10:32 left gave WSU a 16-12 lead, but eight points from Cirone fueled a 12-0 run for the Redbirds, and after Maggie Krick's 14-footer from the left baseline, ISU led 24-16 with 6:59 left thanks to another Shocker drought of nearly three and a half minutes.

Stephens' first points of the night snapped the cold streak with 6:32 left to close the Shockers within 24-18, but a pair of Nicole Lewis free throws extended the Redbird lead to 26-18 with 5:41 left.

WSU closed within four at 26-22 following a Stephens jumper, but ISU rattled off four-straight free throws and a Tiffany Hudson basket to break out to a 32-22 lead with 2:24 left in the half.

A Lewis layin with 1:29 left gave ISU a 34-24 lead before the Shockers began a 6-0 run to end the half capped by a Whitney Rice layin just before the buzzer to put the Shockers within 34-30 at the break.

With four points in the final :36 seconds in a similar fashion to how Indiana State ended the first half against the Shockers on Saturday.

It took Wells just :10 seconds to pull the Shockers within two at 34-32, but ISU ripped off five-straight to lead 39-32 with just over 19 minutes left to play. Wells' 20th point of the night capped a 12-4 run by the Shockers, and vaulted them into the lead, 44-43, with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game. A Tamara Butler three-pointer with 15 minutes left gave ISU the lead, 46-44, but Marcy Sudbeck's layin with just over 14 minutes left tied the game, 46-46.

The teams traded baskets and the lead over the next several minutes before the Shockers built a six point lead following a pair of Wells free throws with 8:33 left, giving WSU a 59-53 lead. A Wells jumper with 7:52 left gave the Shockers a 61-53 advantage, but ISU used a 6-1 run to close within three, 62-59 with 4:35 left to play. WSU pushed ahead by as many as eight, and after a deep inbounds pass to McDonnell resulted in a layup, the Shockers led, 67-59 with 3:36 left.

ISU responded with a quick 6-0 run capped by a pair of Cirone free throws that closed the Shocker advantage to just two at 67-65 with just under two minutes left in regulation.

The Shockers held their lead for the remainder of the game with the help of Daria Frazier's back-to-back layups at the 1:34 and :21 seconds mark. ISU scraped to regain the lead with a pair of free-throws by Cirone, but the Redbirds could not find a way to stop Wells, as she dumped a pair of free-throws with :04 seconds left to score her 1,000th career point.

Wichita State will return to the road this week as they travel to Northern Iowa on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a 7:05 p.m. tip off.
