Shocks Fall to No. 25 OSU, 85-39

12/4/2007 1:00:00 AM

STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 25 Oklahoma State (8-0) used a mixture of defenses and a strong transition offense to race past the Wichita State women's basketball team (3-5), 85-39, Tuesday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Playing without starting shooting guard Kyrie Kinder, who was sick with flu-like symptoms and did not make the trip to Stillwater, the Shocker offense struggled to make sense of a multiple-look Oklahoma State defense that used a combination of zone and man-to-man, limiting WSU to a 26 percent effort from the floor and forced 25 turnovers. Kiki Stephens led the Shockers with 12 points, with no other WSU player in double figures on the night. OSU was led by Andrea Riley's 22 points.

After scoring the games' first points with a Stephens basket just 35 seconds into the game the Shockers went cold from the field as OSU went on an 11-0 run fueled by a seven-plus minute scoring drought by WSU that wasn't broken until a Stephens jumper with just under 12 minutes left cut the OSU advantage to 11-4.

OSU extended its advantage to 24-7 by the 7:00 mark of the first with a combination of defenses and a solid transition offense powered by a series of blocks and Shocker miscues. The Shockers cut into the lead late in the half with seven points in the final three minutes of the frame, but Oklahoma State sank 13 first-half free throws en route to a 36-16 lead at the break.

The Shockers shot just 24 percent in the first half, as the Cowgirl defense threw multiple looks at the WSU offense, forcing WSU into difficult shots. WSU's defense helped keep the Shockers within striking range in the first, limiting the nation's second-ranked defense to just a 33 percent effort from the floor in the first frame, including a 3-for-12 mark from 3-point range.

The Cowgirls rushed the Shockers with an 11-5 run over the first four-plus minutes in the half and never looked back as WSU fell to 0-2 on the road this season. The Shockers are next in action at 7 p.m., Saturday against UTPA in Charles Koch Arena.
